My first datalog, can someone explain the funkiness?
I have a stock car, except for the boost restrictor removal. I noticed that it was cutting out a bit at part throttle in higher gears with the default UTEC map. I assume it's timing being pulled, but I don't really know. It might even be boost cut or something, because sometimes it's kind of abrupt, and I can hear the drivetrain clunk. I did some logs today, when it was a bit warmer, it was around 50F when I had the problems. I was curious to see if timing was being pulled, but I couldn't reproduce the problem today while logging. This is a full throttle run in 5th gear, data set #4, going from 2500 RPM to 6200. It doesn't show any knock, but I don't know if the timing looks right. Shouldn't it continually decrease as the RPM's increase?

Could be two things.. First, I don't see any knock, so either its not picking it up, or its not happening..
If you don't have a boost gauge installed, you NEED to install one. But as long as boost is 19-21psi in this map, your ok (the stock UTEC map is SO conservative that the stock ECU feels stronger at part throttle! Thats due to how the boost is being controlled at part throttle)
You say your EVO is stock, no aftermarket open air filter?
Ok.. Finally.. CHANGE YOUR PLUGS, put a plug in one step cooler.. Even if thats not the solution to your problem, it makes a huge difference. I also found that the more or less stock gap of .025 or .026 works best on a cooler plug.
It could be fuel or boost cut.. but there's nothing in those maps that could be enough to trigger it.. it sounds more like boost spiking if its not a misfire..

see where you go from 0% load to 10% load???? your timing is 35 then jumps to 11. This is where the utec takes over timing controll. You will get a very noticable cut out feeling there. Mine does the same thing. I had to get rid of my intake and feather the timing in that area. Now its almost not noticeable at all. All your logs should be log #1. Its better. Thats what TXS told me. What else is strange is that you bounced into load 100 twice but never held it. Look at one of my logs and you see that i hold 100 load when reached. HHHmmmm RRR

DUH! I missed that he said part throttle..
I redid my maps to remove all of the timing settings and left the fuel and boost in the map.. now I'm working on new timing that sneaks up on the "good settings" i've gotten, so the transition from stock isn't as dramatic..
But I suspect he's having the same issue that I did at first, either boost spike, or a misfire due to worn plugs..
I don't recall him saying he has a boost gauge so we'll have to wait and see..
Howevever Ray is right about the timing.. I had forgotten about the transition point, I raised my cutover point to 33% from 25% for the point where it takes over from the stock ECU, so I wouldn't hit it as often when doing part throttle driving.
I've spent enough time on my own map that I don't get it anymore..

Thanks for the input. I do have a boost guage, and no other mods (stock exhaust & intake). The boost seems to fluctuate between 1.48 and 1.57 hkPa (21.5 and 22.8 PSI). My peak hold shows that the highest I ever hit is 1.57, and only seems to be hitting that when it's below 45F. And when my boost alarm goes off at 1.52, I'm not always feeling this cutting out at that time, it happens when the boost is lower. So I guess it's not a boost spike causing a cut. Sometimes just after it starts pulling hard, it cuts out a little, then picks back up again. And it definitely seems worse in cold weather. It's not doing this often, but I don't want it to ever happen, I'm worried that it's knock causing timing to be pulled.
I also thought it was odd that the load only hit 100% twice. Especially since I had it floored in 5th the whole time.
I don't think I'm feeling the transition from 0% to 10% load, because it seems like it happens at a higher load point than that. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get this to happen while logging yet so it's hard to say for sure. rraulston, what did you do, just add a few degrees of timing in the 10-20% area?
I guess I'll give the colder plugs a shot.
Wouldn't a misfire cause a CEL?
BTW, I am using Amoco 93 octane.

Yes, an ignition (Coil or grounded plug) misfire would cause a check engine light, but this is a compression related misfire.. basically the turbulence/cylinder pressure is enough to "blow out" the spark.. happens pretty frequently and its a fairly inexpensive fix to replace the plugs.. I bet their pretty fouled at this point too, which gives up a little on their efficiency.
also check your transition point, some of the UTEC's sold have them set at 80% instead of 25% (though I recommend 33% unles you've got your timing really dialed in and transitioning good)

Thanks Jack. Is the transition point "TPS threshold point for mapping"? If so, then mine is at 80%. I thought I went through all the settings before I did the install to make sure they were set at the correct default values, but I must have missed that somehow. So this means the stock ECU was doing all the work below 80% throttle, since the stock map has "ECU" in all the 0% load points? If that's the case then I could very well be feeling roughness right as I cross 80% TPS, since it happens when I roll on the throttle. I have felt a slightly abrupt kick when rolling on the throttle a couple times. But that's not the same issue as when it cuts out, that's happening at full throttle.
Looking at the stock boost map, it has ECU at all TPS points below 80%, and has 100% for all TPS points above 80%. So stock boost levels are being used when the throttle is below 80%, right? Should this also be adjusted? It seems like it would be tricky to smooth this part out, since I don't know what the stock ECU levels would be near the transition point.
Can you tell me what plugs to get? Are the NGK BPR 7ES that LancerShop has a good choice? And how often do you change your plugs?

Plugs generally last 10k-15k miles.. with high boost its probably good to replace them more frequently..
I don't recall the exact term for the transition point, but it does sound like that one "TPS Threshold poit for mapping" There's another thread posted with the setting to look for, but that definitely sounds like the one.
the funny part is, when you move it from 80% to 25% (or 33%) you'll notice it more in highway driving, when your accellerating at part throttle, since you'll hit that point fairly frequently..
The fuel and boost aren't so much an issue with that stumble, its the timing difference that your feeling, so once you got a transition point that you like, you need to set your timing in the cells of approx 30% to be close to what it may see stock at that point, and you can minimize the stumble..
at WOT, a stumble (surging sensation) can be fuel cut, misfire, or boost cut.. but if you still have stock plugs, I'd guess that its more than likely you need to replace the plugs.
If I recall the stock plugs were either DENSO or NGK, Irridium plugs either way.. If I recall, the 7 range was similar to the stock heat range, but I could be wrong. Just verify it before you buy them.. when you get them, compare the plugs to the stock plug, the insulator (white ceramic part in the center) shouldn't stick out as far as the stock plug. and you can gap them as high as .030 though at that gap I got a bit of misfire, I tightened them to .026 which is .001 larger than stock .025

FWIW, don't go much higher than 21psi of boost until you can do some other upgrades.. you could be experiencing boost cut at 22.8psi (and of course engine knock, detonation, etc..)

I set the threshold to 33%, and I noticed the difference right away. I accidentally broke the tires loose coming out of my driveway. It's much more fun driving around town now
It's like 32F out, so I figured it would be a good chance to catch this problem in the log, but it didn't happen. Oh, well.
Here's something else weird, I'm not seeing any performance difference between stock mode and map 1. I did a few Gtech runs to compare, and they look almost identical, if anything the map 1 runs seem to hit peak HP a little earlier and fall off earlier, but only by a very small amount. It "feels" exactly the same in stock mode. The dashboard screen showed stock and map 1, so I know the switch was in the right place. Any idea what the heck is going on here? It makes me think that timing might be getting pulled in the top end under map 1, but I'm still not seeing any knock counts. I'm not feeling any stuttering right now either.
