Best way to install PS2?

ok, this one is for all the car audio/ video guys on the site evo, lancer and ralliart.

My original plan was 2 7" headrest screens with a flipdown screen (roofmount) by the rear view mirror all connnected to an alpine dva -7996 unit.

But for financial reasons I cant afford the headunit, so I'm planning on installing a ps2 which would double as my dvd player (for the time being).

My question goes out to anyone that has done this. How would I go about connecting 2 headrest screens and a roofmount screen into a ps2. What kind of components would I need to buy so I can send a signal to all 3 screens? Also, whats the best way to wire the ps2 in to get power. I know they make a car adapter/cigarette lighter plug I could use, but that looks cheap. I'd like to know how to hardwire the game system in.

I would greatly appreciate any help because I have no knowledge of electronic stuff and really dont have the money to pay someone to do this.

in my old cavalier i used to have my ps 2 hard plugged into a power converter. then the converter was hidden under my seat and hard wired to the batter like u would with an amp... for video and sound... the yellow video out put was connected to a screen and the red and white out put was connected to the AUX on the back of my head unit.

My PS2 sits under the driver's seat and I have a set of cables wired underneath the center console. My inverter is behind the lower din and all you can see of it is where it plugs into the cig lighter. Controllers are also wired underneath the center console. This way I'm able to remove the PS2 at any time so I can use it in my apartment.

I'm not sure how you can wire the individual screens to play off the PS2 though. I would assume you take the video inputs of the 3 screens and use something along the lines of y connectors to combine the 3 inputs into one and then plug the video output of the PS2 into that. The audio output from the PS2 should plug into your h/u.

Wire a power inverter to your ignition so it isn't powered unless the key is on. Get an FM modulator so you can listen to the PS2 through your existing stereo or get a new one with an aux input. Get a video amplifier, connect the PS2 to the input and the 3 screens to the outputs. If you use RCA Y connectors you'll have 3 horrible pictures. PS2 is a pain in the *** and you will wind up getting a seperate DVD player anyway. You have to reset it every time you turn your car on to play and unless you spend more money on RF controllers, it's harder to operate.

^^^ Just like he said. But you will still need the video amplifer no matter what. This is what you would need.

ok...pretty much what everyone else did...i just got done installing all my stuff last week...but my car is in the body shop this week getting my kit on...

1)
a:what head unit do you currently have?

if stock, then you will need and fm modulator...hard wired not wireless if possible! cus wireless just sucks
b: if you have an aftermarket head unit then run the audio rca from the ps2 and put in in the inputs if it has one...

2)for multiple monitors you will need a video amplifier..can be found just about anywhere they carry mobile video things. cus you will have a shaky video if you dont do it that way

3) for your power needs...get in inverter...120w should be good enough...i spliced my inverter into the cigaret lighter and all my wiring is hidden under the center console and i took out the rear ash tray and the switch for the inverter is there...i still have to mo unt it but with the ashtray out it will mold in pretty well...

i wish i would have taken pics while i was doing this cus i totally forgot...but ill try and take pics on wednesday night when i get my car back from my body shop

pm me if you need help with something

hey. this is what i did for mine, practically the same as everyone else. i built a hanging shelf and upholstered it with black leather, and hung it directly below the glovebox. the ps2 is powered by an inverter, which is hidden under the center console. the audio from the ps2 goes straight into the aux channel on my cd player. the video then goes to monitor #1, which is on the dash, the video comes OUT monitor #1 from the video out RCA plug, and goes to monitor #2 which the the drivers side headrest, then out to #3, which is the passenger side headrest. pretty much the same as the above methods. it works well and interchanges with everything easily.. plus, i wired everything to this wireless remote that can go on my keyring, so i can turn the power to the monitors off when i get out of the car, since they're hard wired to the battery wires. i got the wiress thing at autozone for like, 30 bucks. you can wire anything to it, like a wireless remote wire. hope this helps a little.

Like black ralliart said, if all your screens have a video output, you might not need an amplfier. Dont use y's though, weakens the signal. If you are going to be using it for DVD and CD, here is a trick I used that was cool. Instead of having the controllers always out to operate it. Go to a Best buy or something and get the DVD remote/ sensor and a controller extension cable. My PS2 is under the passenger seat, but the controller extension cable runs up through the center console and then I did some fiberglass work to built a mount for the remote sensor which plugs into the cable. The sensor is mounted flush with the dash and now you can just point the remote at the dash to start the DVD or change the CD track!!

you gotta get an fm modulator of your h/u doensn't have an aux output. And i agree with what was said that you should get a video amplifier and for multiple tv's and the idea with the extending of the sensor that was just mentioned was a good idea. In my car i got visor monitors, and the avic-n1 in the dash. I got a x-box modded out with a 200 gig hard drive that i use as my personal computer that i have all my games, movies and music stored on for easy access. I did the same thing with extending the sensor to a better location. I got the x in the trunk mounted to the bottom of the rear deck.
