stock speakers junk? nah, definitely not. the stock stereo is pretty damn good, especially for a $15k car. those speakers can probably handle a lot more than what's going to them anyway. everywhere i have seen says that the stock headunit is a 25x4 (on a 2002 at least..they may have upped it to 140 on the 03s). but the speakers are rated at 15watt rms. this is reasonable since that 15watt is probably at 1khz, and not 20-20khz. i highly doubt the stock 6.5"ers can hit below 40hz though. not really sure what the exact specs on them are however.
the ls has 6 speakers, true, but it's still the same 4 channel headunit powering them. this is because the extra 2 speakers are just tweeters mounted in the front, that only take the high freqs from the front 2 channels.
you have to remember though that 140 watts is only 35w per channel. and it's 35 headunit watts, not good amplifier watts. adding an amp and new speakers (at least the front, unless you really care about the back passengers) will greatly improve the sound quality, even though it comes pretty damn good stock.

do you know if you could replace the speakers with lighter ones, i know the big magnets in most speakers weigh alot, i think the ones in there sound really good, just thought i might be able to save some weight

I have my head unit 35X4 going thru it.. and it's ok.. the speakers aren't the best.. but they don't sound half that bad with decent ampage going thru it. They don't start to sound like crap until I get up into 80% peak volume range for the head.. it sucks that my subs sound so smooth at that volume and that the stocks start to give out =( I may need to rip my old polk components out of my old car..
Merry xmas guys.

so if i put in my Kenwood with 45 watts going through the 4 speakers, the stock speakers will explode. Right?
so all in all, if u're upgradin, get new head unit and speakers. not one or the other.
my actual question was the specs, but oh well, i dont care anymore
thanks everyone!
