seeking florida alternator dealer
yea i got hooked up with a JL system from my dads hookups and im in need of a new alternator. the stock alternator isnt going to provide enough power, i dont know if i need another one bolted on, or just a replacement. i got a price of $450, but the guy said theres like some chip thats in the computer and no on the alternator or something? so it might not be possible to replace the alternator or bolt another one on. any information regarding the stock alternator would really be helpful. thanks.

cap doesn't provide more amperage. to increase amount of current that is provided to the stereo you need to upgrade the alternator.

http://www.balmar.net/PDF/Alternator...or%20Guide.pdf - for info on selecting an alternator. (this is just info. i believe this is a guide for trucks. but it can provide some useful info)
contact a mitsu dealer and ask them about changing the alternator or for specs on the stock one. user manual may have some info too. as far as i know it's an 85amp. 200amp is heavy duty....sure you need all that?

not neccisarily cup, go to a shop that specializes in auto wiring and have them upgrade the wire that goes from the alt to the batt to 10 guage. that allows more current to flow to your batt which increases the power going to your stereo

and it doesn't make sense that the restriction on current supplied would be the alternator wire. most likely this wire can supply the given amperage. upgrading the wire may provide a small relief of current, but to get more amperage (as when adding high powered amplifiers) you need to get a larger amp alternator. but 200amp alternator is really big, not sure that it is particularly needed.

heh
heh yes i need a heavy duty alternator. jl w7's suck up most of the power in the car. i have one of those special batteries, and a battery isolator. my dad is the install manager of sound advice so i'm pretty sure he knows what hes doing. when he says we need a bigger alternator, then we need a bigger alternator.

current = watts/voltage
and by the way, you are forgetting that it is an AMPLIFIER. it's 1600 musical watts. and the alternator is more like 14.4-15 volts. please do not answer if you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. you didn't even get the right formula. every thing you said in that statement is completely ridiculous.

to draw 256 amperes you would need a 3840 watt refrigerator. and amps isn't a measure of power, it's a measure of current. to get power (wattage) you multiply by the voltage, or multiply by the square of the resistance. if you are pushing 1600 watt amplifiers, you do NOT need a 200 amp alternator. get some caps.

what is your amp?
go check the specs it will tell you how many current it draws. o way you need 200 amps. And I'm curious what amp is giving 1600 Watts RMS at a low distortion... Seem you count too much on product specs

let's say you use the V12 high end Alpine amps
MRV-F540 ... 60A amp fuse (or two 30A fuses in
parallel)
that's from the owner's manual at http://ecominet2.alpine-usa.com/html...rv-f540_om.pdf
so don't tell me you need a 200 amps alternator if the biggest amps will never draw more than ~60 amps.
140 amps will be more than plenty (since your 85 have already more than it needs... Probably a 120 amps will be enough.
