Amp, sub, speaker info please.

Other than my Alpine HU I am totally stock on the stereo system. I think for the most part the speakers sound OK, and we are thinking of adding an amp and sub into the trunk. I am not wanting to blow peoples house windows out driving down the road, but want it to be noticed, not too much though.
I was wondering then how many subs? and what size?
What type of sub box, ported or no?
How can I make it fit properly with my trunk strut bar?

Now on to amps. There are many choices, not meaning brand names, like mono etc. or other type, # of channels, power. What is the difference?

What should I go with when I do this, money is an objective here, I don't want to spend too much as I am a poor man.

I (had) 2 12" JL W0's in a huge ported box. And before I bought a newer, more powerful amp and blew the 9 year old subs, they were great and performed well for many years. I'd recommend looking at the new JL W0's. They recommend the specific ported or sealed appl. on each product. But as far as amps go, Apline does have a good product line with good prices. Definitely go mono, something around the 740 watt range for 2 12" (new) JL W0's such do ya great. Hope this helps, and good luck.

So is ported or sealed box the way to go, and 10" or 12", and one or two of them?

with a ported box you get alittle more "loudness" (SPL) but the bass is less tight (SQL) whenever you find the right woofer for you, the manufacturer will usually recomend the kind of box for that woofer, i have a JL 12W6v2 and a 500/1 amp and it is way more bass than i need.

that was pretty much what my next response woulda been

what kind of music do you listen to? do you want tight, punchy bass? or do you just want it to boom? the type of box you use, the sub(s), and how you tune your amp are good to keep in mind when looking at this

i have a lot of experience with JL Audio, try a look at their 12W3v2, they are not that expensive, about 180 online but they put out a lot of bass.

Well I would guess we would like more of a quality sound than a crappy window breaking sound, but we aren't rolling in money either, so price is a factor here.

I'd go with a sealed box, as sealed is louder from far away than ported is. (the port causes cancellation after the first ful wavelength of the tuning frequency) and I'd go with 2 12" subs, around 400 RMS total, so you can go with pretty entry level stuff and still do well. I'd go with something from pioneer, kenwood, rockford fosgate, etc, and get a decent amp.

whats the difference if you can hear the bass farther away in a sealed box rather than a ported box. If you that worried about making sure other people can hear your subs then you should just get 15's....abnoxiously loud.

picking the right kind of sub and box combo depends on what kind of music that you listen to and what you are trying to accomplish from this system.
