In Dash GPS

Hey Guys,

Ok, I have the Pioneer AVIC-N1 and currently im not feeling it, I've had it for 6 months and I dunno about u americans but up here where I live, the map situation sucks BIG TIME!

I am currently seeking to see if pioneer has upgraded maps for my city...but if they dont I am lookin into something bigger and better...

WHY? My best friend, his sisters friend drives a 05 Escalade and in there he has this thing called on "On-Star" and when hes at my friends house, it has like all his streets and crescents and what not and on mine its a freakin blank screen cause my maps are crap...that pisses me off...my friend even said how thats kinda sad how the stock GPS ones are better and aftermarket companies cant keep up to that which makes me sad as well.

So...heres my question.

Is there a GPS deck out there (eg: Alpine,Clarion, etc etc) that is as good as this on-star system or is very creditable, I like how pioneer has that voice which is like "LEFT TURN AHEAD" its pimp but the maps suck!

What do u guys think of the whole computer in your car...is there good software to make a wicked GPS system??

Lemme know...im quite choked, i dunno whether its the disc or my city jus gets the shaft for getting updated...

i dont think you can add on-star to any car you want, or even add it after the car is finished. its incorporated throughout the whole car. they can unlock your doors if you call them. it would be bad ***, but i don't know.

i haven't been all that impressed with the pc based navigation myself. the one that i have been most impressed with is the acura one. it has everything. i haven't used an alpine for about a year now, but it was pretty nice when i used it. do you live in a small town??

i think he is looking for something as good as on-star, not actually on-star b/c on-star is only available on GM vehicles.

I believe your hu is already the best there is with gps already implimented, other than going with a stand alone gps unit.

This is why I don't have a navi system. They are great if you live in a big city, but get outside the city and you have problems. The only navigation systems that I've seen that are starting to be pretty good with rural mapping are the standalone GPS units like Garmin and TomTom. You can update them with the latest maps, and info by downloading new ones. As far as I know, most of the head unit navi systems just use DVDs, so you need to get new dvd's in order to get new maps (although some newer units will allow you to download new info). And you're only limited to the streets and areas that are on the dvds. If you have a pioneer though, they are supposed to be one of the best head unit navigation systems. I would just contact pioneer and see if they have any new map dvds for canada. If not, they will eventually so I'd just wait it out.
