latest updates on black03oz's setup
Yep...they got me. My car was broken into between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm today. The piece(s) of **** just got my Eclipse CD8454 and did a lot of damage. Not that any of the fiberglass stuff could have been removed quickly.
Now I just have to figure out which Eclipse deck to replace it with. Sucks.

Idea, is there any way to hard-mount the HU to the metal structure inside the din area? I know HUs come with extra screw holes all over the place. Rather than a ****** and grab, it'd be a "holy ****, this thing won't come out". Fuc thieves; they got my favorite Rockford HU out of my Escort a few years back.
Good luck!

All you would really have to do is get the factory brackets, weld some tabs on and then weld some nuts to those. Drill holes in the metal part of the dash that line up with the new tabs and then bolt it in from inside the glove compartment and driver's side knee bolster.
You could just get something fairly cheap for now and see what the new year brings in the audio world. Kenwood is starting to step it up a few notches in their lower end. Will be interesting to see what everybody comes out with. And, if you don't find anything you are interested in, Feb. should bring the big sales from this year's left over units.

Every aftermarket haed unit comes with a back strap. They can be very effective in keeping your stereo in the dash. The Evo is an easy car to use them since the lower pocket is removeable and has plenty of metal areas to attach to. Without a lot of time, some searching and the correct security socket I am sure my head unit will not come out. Even when you use the factory brackets, $1 in security screws can make a huge difference in who gets to listen to your stereo.

Detachable face models offer little security. The face when removed is normally still in the car and a theif will still break your window. You can also buy replacement faces for $45-$75 so teh theif has a brand new looking stolen head unit for next to no $$$.
