Polk DB650
These speakers seem like the very best bang for the buck. But the crutchfield don't think they would fit. the Top-mount Depth is 2 inches. Does the seem like anything that would conflict with our stock grills and everything? it's a 6 1/2 and the polk DB6500's (the component version) fits fine for some reason and it's pretty much the same thing except a bit taller. The sales person said that the bottom depth was fine and the top was too much so the speaker would be "crushed." what do you guys think? thanks

You could always fabricate a plastic spacer to lift the stock grill. I think they are telling you that with full excursion of the speaker, it would hit some of the grill. Unless you like the sound of rattling speakers, and like the risk of tearing cones, I'd suggest that increading the height of the grill may be your only solution. Hope that helps.

Hey
What if I just took out the grills. Are the front door grills connected to the door panel or can they come off? I bet that only the tweeter sticks out. I could cut a hole or a semicircle in the grill to see if the tweeter will stay in. These polks seem real nice. Any other ideas on how I could make it work? I wonder what the stock upper mount depth is? Anyone know? If it's like 1/2 inch I can make it work probably.

and if I don't get the polks can anyone tell me what speakers to get that have clear bass. Not like hardhitting bass but just something decent. and good mids and highs. Those polks got awesome reviews that I'm not seeing anywhere else.

I installed them in my car. I just closed up the openings a bit in the rear deck and then drilled some new holes. You can just bend the lip of the stock openings up to fill in the gaps for the slighlty smaller Polks. If you feel comfortable with a minor bit of install work, they are great. I didn't use any brackets.
They sound decent, but need a bit more power than the stock speakers. I have the Evo SSL package (w/amp), and that was adequate.

Basically I'm back to step one. I know what headunit I'm going to get. It's a kenwood that pushes 22W x 4 rms. I want good speakers that come with all the necessary hardware to install them in the doors and the rear deck. I'm going to get them for cheap on ebay so all I'm going to get is the retail package. None of the goodies that crutchfield sends. So does have any good 6.5's or 6.75's that mount perfectly with all the stock hardware and have clear/clean bass and great mids to highs. I'm not talkin about thumpin bass but the bass has to be there at least. Thanks

I had them in my Galant and was runnign them off an Alpine HU. 9835 I think it was. They sounded very good. I think they are worth the modification to get them in the car if all it takes is a spacer.

does anyone know which 6.5's don't need any modification. I know how to install a system but as far as modifying things go, I'm pretty clueless. Anyone get any good speakers that came with all the parts you needed to install them in our lancer. What about the 7" kickers? thanks
