Portable MP3 player in Stock HeadUnit

MP3 player connected to Stock HeadUnit
Hello guys, Ok I need your help!
It's one of my first cars and I've never messed around with in-car stereo system before so my questions will be kinda lame ... I have a Lancer ES 2002. I think what I want to do is pretty simple. I want to connect a portable mp3 player (like an iPod) to play on my car system with a cable from the headphone plug on the player to the head unit.
I've tried the FM Transmitter (a la iRock) solution but I am not satisfied with sound quality most of the time.
I've looked around on a couple of forums and some are suggesting to use the BOSS FM Modulator but this is still thru FM so it's kind of low-quality too. I would like to be connected directly thru a wire for better sound. I'm not a freak (audiophile or something like that) but I want good sound for my music.
I've found a post in this forum saying that the stock headunit has a proprietary input port to connect a CD Changer (see here). Could I use some kind of adapter for this port to trick the headunit?
If not, can I modify the headunit?
Is what I am trying to do possible at all or I better just get a new h/u with AUX input in the front? I would prefer not because I think the one that came with the car is quite ok for my needs.
Any ideas welcomed...
Thanks!
Stephane

what's up bios! alright. i have an ipod, and i also tried the irock at first, but it sucked so i resold it, and i got the BOSS FM Modulator ($30 shipped on ebay) and the quality is just fine. it is through fm, so it's not quite cd quality, but its real good, especially if you're not a freak about it. it is wired in, so its not transmitted like the irock.
as for other options, i think they sell things that can change the cd changer port to rca's, but i'm not sure if they sell them for our stock hu.
your other option is to get a new hu, and you can get em with aux inputs in the back, so your cords are hidden.
people that put dvd players in their cars generally use modulators, so for $30, i think it is a great deal, and if you know anything about splicing wires, you can hook it up yourself.
hope that helps you understand what's goin on. i was in your exact same position just a little while ago

Yes I do have the stock headunit (the Mitsubishi AM/FM/CD unit that shipped with the Lancer ES 2002 model).
How is an FM Modulator really working? It's send the music directly in the antenna port? Can you "overpower" all stations? I live in Dallas and the airwaves are crowded around here... there's not much free frequencies to use.
Thanks for your idea... however, anyone has more info on using that Cd Changer port (I'm not even sure it's on the headunit... I just read it on this forum somewhere... see previous post for link).
Thanks!

the modulator works on 88.5 or 88.9 it plugs directlly into your antenna, and it comes with a switch to turn it on/off so that if there is anything on the station, when you turn it on, it only plays your mp3 player.
you can search the internet for the cd changer adapter.
