Which 6 3/4 speakers fit without mods

Hi all,

I was doing a search but have not found a definitive list of aftermarket 6 3/4" speakers or 6 1/2" speakers with adaptor rings that would fit the EVO without any additional drilling or fussing around. Could people pitch in as to their experiences? Many thanks.

I am hoping that the Infinity 652.5i (165mm) and may be the Focal 165mm speakers will fit without mods.

Thanks a bunch!

I installed Infinity Kappas.
60.5i in the front ( separate components so I could replace the factory tweeters in the A pillars)
63.5i in the back. these are 3 way but one piece.
Mine are 6 1/2 but came with adapter rings so they bolted right in.

The 6 3/4 speaker - 652.5i will bolt right in, but I wanted the 3 ways in the back, so I got the 6 1/2s.

All come with external crossovers which you have to put somewhere.
I wanted perfects but the speaker that would have gone into the door was too deep and would
have interfered with the window. I could have made a spacer but I didn't want any fuss.
It does turn out there is enough room behind the door panel to do that however.

Word of caution - the new tweeters were thicker than the factory ones, so I had to make a new bracket for them.
The factory bracket held them out too far and I couldn't get the pillar covers on.
If you don't want to mess with that, then put in the other kind and leave the factory tweeters.

Picking speakers is such a subjective thing. Each person likes a particualr sound. I would suggest spending time
at some audio shops and listen for yourself.
I was told by many friends about this brand or that brand, but I picked the Infinitys because they
sounded good to me.

It's my money so it's my opinion that counts

Edit - I just checked the mount depth of the 652.5 and it will be real close in the door. OK for the back deck.
You should probably stick to a 6 1/2 speaker for the doors.

I installed last years 2 way 6 3/4 Kappas in the doors. I needed to make a trim ring out of wood for a good fit, but they sound great with no depth problem. Have left the rears stock, but would love to find some efficient 6 3/4 woofers only to mount there. I fould 1 new but circa 1980 Delta 6 1/2 that I may install, but a pair of something would be a better choice.

Just put in a set of MB Quart 6 1/2's in the doors tonight. They are the PCE 216. The woofers depth is exactly perfect, with just a few millimeters from the window, but enough to clear it without any spacers. They are not, however, wide enough to fit in the factory mounting holes. I don't think anyone will find a set that will a) fit in the hole, and b) still be able to reach the mounting holes. The stock speakers have those notches on the corners to reach the mounting holes, and I don't know of any aftermarket speakers that will. So I drilled new holes that are a little closer to the edge of the speaker hole. There is not much room for error, but if you mark off the place where you want to drill, it can be done.

The tweeters fit just fine, with no modifications necessary. I have the crossovers in the trunk, and ran wires for both the woofer and tweeter up front. They sound real sweet!!

Also have the PWE 216 (the woofer part of the PCE 216 component set) in the rear. I had to drill new holes in the back just like in the doors. That was a lot more tricky because of the rear window, but again with some patience and lots of drill bits it can be done (broke 3 bits).

Just my opinion and experience, but if you have the $$$, go for the Quart's.

If you're looking for something a little better than run-of-the-mill midfi you should check out some of the Focal component systems. One of their distributors sells them direct to the public at very good prices.

I have a set of these installed in the front and rear. They sound most excellent.

mikec,
What ones do you have installed and where do you get them from?
The Focals are one of the very best around

Did you mount the front cross over in the dash?

Also any hints on fabricating brackets for the tweeters (e.g. what material did you use)?

The crossovers tucked up into the dash easily by each kick panel.
You have to spend a little time fishing the wires from the Xovers through the rubber raceway into the door.

For brackets I used a 1" wide piece of metal strapping left over from some garage door openers.
It doesn't have to be very stiff, just enough to hold the tweeter still.
You can find stock like this at Home Depot or similar places.
It was pre-drilled every inch. I took about 3" piece, bent the last inch about 20deg.
It is the same angle as the factory bracket. Use it for a template.
You want the tweeter to end up in the same position, but closer to the A-pillar so the cover goes on.

I don't mean to start a fan war or sound like a noob, but in your collective experience, are the MB Quarts better sounding speakers than the Infinity Kappas? They don't seem to sell MBs in Jamaica, only the infinities.

Thanks.

what I did was go to several car audio places and listen to all the brands I was interested in.
Take your own music to listen to.
I chose Infinity because that is what sounded good to me ( within the price range I was willing
to spend. ADS speakers sonded better to me, but they were twice the price ).

Picking speakers is a very personal thing. Everyone hears something different. Everyones taste is different.
Whatever you do, don't get pulled into buying something just because of its brand name.
It's your money; yours is the only opinion that counts.

I put Quarts in one of my cars and they didn't last a week. Pulled them and installed Infinity. I couldn't get a flat response or correct sound stage without massive equalization.

Each car, speaker and person is different so it is very difficult to predict how things will turn out. This said I have never installed Infinity speakers and pulled them right back out in favor of something else. I think that Infinity represents a great value.
