Component Door Speakers
I'm really set on the 6.5 polk db6501's, but crutchfield only specifies fitment for the rear deck. Does anyone have experience installing these specific models into the doors? Modification necessary? If impossible, can anyone think of some other great components in the $100-$200 range that could fit without an issue?

Polk Audio makes a great product, nice choice. I am actually doing all new 6.5's in my 2005 Lancer ES. You will most likely need an adapter for your speakers because the hole in your door panels and rear deck will be too big for your new speakers.
Let me know how it goes...

Factory speakers and aftermarket speakers although 6.5" are not the same size when it comes to mounting. As far as the depth goes I would say pull the old speaker out and measure with the window rolled down. If worse comes to worse you can make a bracket similar to what i posted in that link, out of mdf and just trim the plastic on the door to make it fit. It would be much better then having it hit the window.

You can use the factory speaker mount as a template and trace it out of 1/2" mdf, make your own ring/spacer and your 6.5" mid would mount to it. That's what I did.. here's some pics:

Sound is subjective. Bring a couple CD's of what you usually listen to and try a few different shops checking out what they have on display. If its going to be the only set of speakers you ever buy for the car, take a little extra time and do your own field research.
You dont have to buy from the shops you checked out, but it will give you an idea of what youre looking for
