quick amp question

my amp should be here tomorrow or thursday and will be installing it, did my first system myself, but i forgot one thing.

When hooking up the cables to the Amp, do i want to put Ground in first or the Power in first before the ground?

I just cant remember what i did last time.

THanks guys.

If you disoconnect the ground cable from the battery while you're installing, it won't matter. That's probably safest for many other reasons too. And I assume the positive power you're running to the amp is also fused, so remove that fuse.

When I'm working on an amp, or any electronics, I disconnect the ground from the battery and also remove the fuse for the positive wire I'm using. Then, I go back, reattach the ground cable to the battery, then put the fuse in for the positive wire.

Ground last unless your using a circuit breaker, then you hook it all up the flick the switch. All power comes from ground so thats the last step to setting it up.

While technically true that power comes from the ground, it's of little import. The power will travel through the completed circuit when it's completed, regardless of where it's actually completed. It's just best to have your last connection be something simple like the ground connector on the battery or the fuse, rather than a wire on the amp where you have to screw it into place. Ideally, you want all the more difficult connections like those done before the circuit is complete.

so let me make sure i got this right.

1.) Disconncet neg. Side of battrey.
2.) connect ground cable to amp
3.) hook up and run and plug in power cord to amp
4.) hook back up the neg. terminal on the battery.
5.) start up car and listen for some bass

Here's my list...

1. Disconnect ground.
2. Run power off battery or fuse block to an inline fuse, leave fusebox empty, then continue running that circuit back to the amp.
3. Mount the amp.
4. Connect the positive line you just ran to the positive terminal on the amp.
5. Sand your ground point to bare metal and connect ground on the amp to your ground point.
6. Reconnect battery ground and add fuse to positive lead, in whichever order you want - I wouldn't say either is safer or not, namely because neither is dangerous.

im confused by "Jumper block to a fuse"

i am just using the wire i had in my car before i took it out and it already has the fuse attatched to it, so am i supposed to take out the fuse or something?

Sorry - I just reworded it. Jumper wasn't the word I meant to use. But ultimately, you're going to pull a positive power from somewhere. I pulled mine from under the fuse box cover, after the really big main 60A fuse (I think it was 60 anyway) and ran a 6 inch wire down to the side of the battery to an inline fuse box, then that continued into the cabin to my amp.

When I say leave the fuse out, I mean that the inline fuse box should be empty while you're running wires and connecting things up. Make sense?

Without a fuse, you mean? Yes, you can, but it's very bad practice and can be potentially very dangerous to have an unfused circuit anywhere.

here is the correct way. take the fuse out of the fuse holder for the main power line for your amp or just dont connect the fuse holder. hook up the line to the battery and run the cable. mount the amp. hook up the power and ground cables. when install is done, put the fuse in the fuse holder.
