Round vs Oval Mufflers: is there a difference

i posted this question in antother thread but got no responses, maybe making it its own thread will help. I am designing a custom catback, and i was wondering if the size, shape, and tip length affect the performance of the system, or if these were all just for asthetics? i was looking into getting a 5 x 8 magnaflow with a 4" double walled straight tip, becuase it will fit tightly below the chassis of the car, but if a longer tip or a different shape will yield better performance or sound than i will go that route. any comments on this matter would be appreciated.

IMO i thought that all magnaflow mufflers would yield the same results, the style was purely up to the owners tastes.

It's all about taste, and what you like... unless you are adding some strange tip that twirls and bends at the end like a cashew I don't think there's going to be any loss in sound or exhaust

the tip does nothing (especially if its doubled walled and has no silencer). its purely cosmetic unless its a tip you buy for sound (like a whisteling tip or something). all the power is from the exaust and the piping. And a piece of advice...if you are going with magnaflow muffler, then the system they make for our cars is actually quite nice. it prolly isnt alot more expensive than building it yourself. 330 shipped to my door + around 50 for install.

Round are straight through while the oval designs usually have two or more chambers. Straight throughs tend to be less restrictive but louder.
