there is a mivec version of the 6a12 that is in the FTO that's a 2L V6 so it's kinda true. there is also a normal version as well that's found in the galant. the more recent GVR4's have the 6A13TT 2.5L engine. the other mivec engine pre-4G69 is the 4G92 1.6L mivec engine.
there is no "T" designation by mitsubishi. people tack them on for the purpose of distinguishing different versions of the engine. the 6A12, mivec or not, transverse or not, is still the 6A12 by mitsubishi.

As for the orientation.. I'm not positive on 1-3 now that I think about it, but I am sure of the 4's and 5's, as for 6 and up, I know for sure that the 7&8's are reverse to our 4g94, which is why it would be so difficult to swap one in. 6a12 & 4g93's are both vr4 and fto, just checked it out!!
it is the evo i - iii that have their motors opposite to our 4G94 and also the same as the eclipses, talons, etc. every other evo comes with the same mototr setup as the 4G94, which is intake at the back, exhaust at the front, and timing cover on the pass side.
as for the use of the word "transverse"...EVERY engine in the mitsu lineup that i know of is transversely mounted...transverse means sideways, as opposed to longitudinal which means front to back...take a look at 5L mustang or 5.7L firebird, etc...those engines mount longitudinally and thus have timing up front, flywheel towards the firewall....now look at our cars where the motor is transverse, timing facing pass fender and flywheel facing driver fender
