Some questions on plugs/wires/coil packs

did some searching. Didnt find all answers I wanted.

1: I read the recent threads and saw the NGK V-Power coppers were great and the lancers gap was .44

I went today to all auto stores. no one carried anything for my car. but oh well. I searched on ngk site and they say I need a .32 gap and thats also what every auto store listed for the lancer...

So.... Am I just missing something or what?

2 : I want to get new plus wires but I figure ill upgrade while im at it. Magnacore only makes two. which leaves out the two that come right off the coil packs. Is there any that anyone has come across that upgrade the two right off the packs? Or is there such a thing as upgraded coil packs for this car? I read magnacores arnt really worth it because two of them still would be oem...

Cliff Notes:

1. do I need .44 or .32 gap and NGK iridiums or v-power would be fine?
2. Can I upgrade coilpacks or upgrade ALL 4 plug wires (two of which come straight off the coilpacks). thanks.

Read some more waiting for responses and decided to get the NGK set of two wires... so that takes care of two of them anyway. still not sure about the plugs right off the packs.

NGK only seems to offer me the IX Iridiums which are gapped at .32 which is stock I believe. Would these be fine?

There is aftermarket coilpacks for our car but they are not upgrades -- just built to OEM specifications. I had to replace mine because they were burnt out -- they are usually over a hundred dollars each even from the dealer ... DONT waste any money on them if yours are not broken -- OEM's coil packs are fine -- The plug boot is connected to the pack, not really a wire so you don't need them upgraded.

Here's a good faq for plug wires from magncecor

ok. good to know. I wasnt sure if there were upgraded packs or not. So I do not havr to worry about those. I think im gonna get the NGK set of wires. much cheaper then magnecore.

Still not quite sure on the plugs though. I dont want to burn out my coil packs. especially like you say, at $100 a pop.

Heres where im lookin. Im lookin at the IX Iridiums.

I see that the site says that --- ummm, it may depend on the iridiums ... but if you look under your hood, it tells u the gap size is around .044, and also in your manual. The gap that I always use is .044 -- infact, I have the iridiums and they are already factory gapped to around there.. So it might be an error on the site.

advanced auto, VIP and autozone comps showed .32 when I went there looking for V Power coppers. All I see on here is .44 so I am not sure on which.lmao

changed the year from 03 to 02..... got different results. 2003 lancer is listed for .32 gap. 2002 is listed as .44 gap.

Okay, when it comes to our Lancers...us as the owners know more than any parts store. They see a listing for Lancer w/ a 2.0L and assume they'll all the same! We all know that's not the case.

1. We use around a .44 gap, and remember Iridiums HAVE to be pre-gapped in order not to damage them. The NGK V-powers are P/N 6953...according to another member on here that found them at NAPA.

2. No aftermarket coilpack designed just for our car, but there are aftermarket ignition systems that replace the entire system. But that's near, if not over a $1k. I've only ever seen NGK and Magnacore aftermarket wires for our car...and ONLY the 2-wires too.

K. thanks a lot.

I went out and checked manual. The gap in manual states it needs to be .39-.43. Ill get the .44 IX Iridiums. Probably dont need Iridiums and could get away with regulars but I like to upgrade anyway.

Good to know I dont have to go on a wild goose chase looking for upgraded coil packs. Ill just replace my wires (its that time) with the slightly upgraded NGK ones. thanks again.

^Thanks for posting what the manual said; I think I'll get some new plugs soon and gap 'um @ .40 and see what happens. What was the price on those Iridiums?

There's only two lines because that's all you need IIRC. There's something weird with the lancer ignition system, I think each coil pack powers two plugs or something like that. Iridiums are a waste IMO because when I had them I didn't notice anything and I've heard they foul quickly. For 7$ a piece though I don't think it's a big deal, when I got mine I paid close to triple that.

yeah. densos were like $13 a pop... I figured these werent much more then base NGK's so I would upgrade. I was gonna get copper which would meen replacing them around 20k. If these last that. Im happy with it.... it will probably be almost two years before I put another 20k on my car....

^You're correct! One pack powers two plugs; thus the reason I believe they tend to go bad... I'm forgetting right now, but does the '08 Lancer have the same ignition setup?

x2 on "the waste" of money; but there are times we just like to "treat" our cars...you know? Iridiums use to be like 50/60 a set, so it's definitely not as bad now.
