Ah the caveman is onto something! Hot air is less dense, meaning lower masses of oxygen per unit volume than if it were cold. Now u need oxygen in the combustion process to make power. See the link? And yes u are correct open air intake systems are worse then stock (depending on location and application). For instance a SRI with a cone in the engine bay would probably lose u power. However if u shield it away from engine heat then it is a different story. Also a CAI is not shielded, but due to its location receives torrents of cooler outside air, thus having the possibility to make more power.

To explain this in simple terms I pose u a question. How much easier is it to breath on a winter's day than during a heatwave? Now u need to link that answer back to why an internal combustion engine needs oxygen.

Now that is just with regards to air temperature without looking at the diameter of the air intake, airflow velocity, pumping losses, smoothing, distance, route etc.

Getting the picture?
Now go make some fire

Well couldn't you just remove the right side of the stock air box and secure the filter to the left side of air box? Wouldnt that be about the same as the SRI?

It would, but again u would be exposing it to hot air.

Has anyone used the DC sports short ram intake? Horsepowerfreaks have them on sale for 08-09 lancer 2.4L for $148.85. Didn't see anything in search about this brand of intake. Good deal?
