Trouble Code P0135

What can I do about this? this is the first time anything has ever happened to this vehicle. I have only owned it for the past 5k miles though.... Passed smog just fine back in June. Does have Fed emissions if that matters, and it is registered and titled in CA now. It was originally an AZ car. Total of 99972 miles on it.

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES, 2.0L, manual, with A/C

I started it up, and that light was there....

Probably the o2 sensor not warming up the way it should. New o2 sensor should fix your issue

Is that all it is? Or is this going to lead to a domino effect of issues? For example replace this part, then it says my other O2 is bad, replace that, then the cat is bad..............

I think that's all it is but ya never know. Most common issue with these is the cat in the manifold goes bad and will throw codes. Just an emission issue. There are a few approaches you could take though

what are the few approaches I could take?

here is the deal. I am not looking to circumvent the situation, or mask it... I am looking to why I am having this code, and what I can do to get rid of it. Is it an issue of possibly bad wiring? is it the sensor itself? Can I determine that off of live data stream? is there a test that can be run to test if the sensor itself is what is causing the code, or if it is something else?

I really need to get this fixed.... I don't believe in the just replace the sensor, as that is seldom the actual fix for anything automotive..... Sure, sometimes sensors do fail, and that is fine, but I am not just going to throw parts at it and hope for it to get better

also, I have reset the code, and it has come back.... I usually reset it, and it comes back within a day or two... this has happened several times, so that rules out being a freak incident

preparing myself to get a new upstream o2 sensor, if I determine that is the cause of my problem....

wow, they are $$$$$$$$$

looking at NTK (NGK) or Denso..... which is the preferred brand here? I know they are both good

Ok, time to revisit this.. have some questions on my plan of attack....

Here is what I have done, and verified. There was a recall for EMR 05001 Rev II -- it was performed on my vehicle in 2007 @ 34k mi

At this point, if I understand this correctly, Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

•O2 Heater element resistance is high
•Internal short or open in the heater element
•O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
•open or short to ground in the wiring harness

with a possible solution of:

•Repair short or open or high resistance in wiring harness or harness connectors
•Replace oxygen sensor (cannot repair open or short that occurs internally to sensor)

is the o2 sensor all it is?

can I test the o2 sensor? I do have a code reader that is capable of live stream data, and I can check the parameters of the 02 sensor while the vehicle is running

do you think I also need the first cat?

finally replaced the o2 sensor.....

have put 428 miles on it over the course of like 5-6 days and the light has not come back, all the I/M checks come back as OK, there are no stored codes, no pending codes and no check engine light

vehicle has had at least 15 on/off cycles, and at least 4-5 freeway trips

HOPEFULLY, this is fixed

currently @ 110474 mi

and this was a $19 no name sensor from ebay
