I drove a LHD Evo 7 today
Hi Guys,
I tried out an Evo 7 RS version, LHD, today. Drove it from Turini to Nice (Turini is the small village up in the mountains above Monaco and it is a very famous special stage of the Rallye Monte Carlo).
The speedometer was in mph in big numbers, and smaller numbers with kms. Dont ask why, I dont know.
Anyway, the Evo 7 is a very stiff and stable car compared to the 6 (I mean the chassis here, not the suspensions), feels better on the road. Acceleration is as good as on the 6, especially if you take into account that the car was not run in properly (200 miles total). That thing with suspensions must be an awesome experience on that road!
To all those who wonder if it is worth the wait: definitely.

Forgot to mention: this was a test fro a French car mag, they also brought a Subaru WRX STI with them to compare.
The STI has a gear lever that resembles the one of a mercedes A Class or sthg: no precision, feels pretty ****ty. That car has no brakes either. Well it does, but after a few times braking, the brakes faded away. No way you can do any serious driving with that. The turbo has a lot more lag. I almost crashed into the guy when accelerating out of a hairpin (I was behing him as he came out of the hairpin). Could have passed him anywhere had the road been larger.
Just for your enjoyment: my rallye driving friend took the journalist with him down the Col de Turini. After that, he was convinced that:
- the Evo 7 was much better than the Scooby
- he needs some driving instruction
- he changed colours (turned from pink to white/green)

Yep, I believe the standard 7 could be better than the standard 6, because of the standard chassis being stiffer, but in the end, in race mount with different diffs, a full cage, etc. I think the weight difference would kick in. I plan to add some sort of a cage to my car at some point and don't think that the 7 would be the better choice then.

Agree with you Michael. I might get mine rewelded. Dont know about the cage, maybe the CUSCO one retaining rear seat use. What do you think?
Andre
Yes it had the 3 ACD settings. That's std. Havent tried them though. No AYC on the RS Slides progressively, very progressiveley. You'll love it!

What do most cage builders charge for a custom cage near you guys?
I've seen the Cusco cage and it's pretty weak. Someitmes the Japanese go for style over safety a little too much. Those bends in the front A pillar bars are just horrible.
I would sugggest finding custom cage builder and have a bolt in cage made. Just make sure he's qualified to do the work.

Hi Claudius
Glad to see you got a chance to drive the 7 and liked it.
I have had mine now for just over 3 weeks and do not regret my decision to part with my 6. As you say they are SO progressive
I went for a GSR with the Sports ACD unit (rather than LSD) which has made a hell of a difference and have the Eibach springs on for the now (Drummond upgrade decision has been defered until after Xmas). It hides it's speed so well due to the improved suspension travel that I actually thought it was no quicker than my 6 until I looked at the speedo and saw I was going 20 MPH faster between my favorite corners. I would recommend any 7 owner (come on Andre!) try a sports ACD if they get the chance as they react far quicker and provide a much higer mu than the standard unit. In either case, I have found Gravel setting to be my favorite

I am not convinced the ACD is better, but I will let you know what my friend the rallye driver thinks.
Is it possible to fit the ACD onto a TME? I guess so. The better question would be: "how much does it cost to make an ACD work on a TME?"
Andre,
I do not know if you can get a 7 without ACD, I didnt think so, that's why I asked Superlancer.

This is a nice review mate. Now you'll sell your Mak? Even if the VII was faster than the VI, overtaking with the VI will be a lot easier as it looks much more intimidating so you don't need any turning-lights
Good to hear that the STI is still a slauch. Switzerland will be flooded soon by those Scoobies as they're very keenly priced. BTW have you seen the callipers of the STI. Look very similar to the EVOs, no good then.
Cheers

I am just saying what I thought which my rallye champion friend confirmed after he drove it (he drove the STI first! ). He said the gear lever of the STI is "mayonnaise" which you will probably like to hear, Mike. The journalists who came with the STI said it has no brakes, which was confirmed after 3 miles downhill in Turini. Although they look pretty cool in gold (if you like bikes especially), they arent worth ****.
Oh, I have no plans to sell my TME, but I plan to get it rewelded. This will make it even stiffer than a std Evo 7, with the agressive looks you mention, the air intake in the bumper, a NICE back spoiler (the 7 spoiler is not even close in terms of looks!) and those motherffffin suspensions of mine! Muahaha!!
Dont know what you mean easier to overtake, do you actually wait for people to let you pass? And hey, you have time to use your blinkers to overtake? Where do you drive? On the highway???

Hi Andre
It is the Ralliart Sports ACD I am refering to - Part number RA553831K1
It was recommended by a local Rally Team who ran a Grp N 7 in the Network Q this year. They datalogged the standard item, the K1 and the full blown K2 Rally ACD unit and as they know me well, recommended the K1 for my application. They were spot on and the improvements are instantaneous. It works on both GSR and RS models ofcourse and I wanted to try this on an AYC fitted GSR car to see if I could attain theadvantages in handling characteristics AYC has but whilst providing the progressive feel of an LSD based car, and I think I'm almost there.
It is head and shoulders better than a 6 GSR with AYC fitted make no mistake.
As I know how much you like driving sideways, you should certainly add this to your list of things to buy...
