Evo Maintenance

Looks like the Evo requires lots of specialized maintenance. Can somebody with an Evo post an example maintenance chart from the owner's manual?

Thanks!

The AYC fluid replacement can be a nightmare.
It's especially hard if no one around here has the equipment or the experience.
Wish i had the LSD instead of the AYC.

yeah, agree with ra29 its the AYC that's the $$$$$. everything else is pretty easy. access is good. remember the car was designed for rallying where the ability to change components easily and quickly is paramount.

i would service mine myself but then i'd loose the warranty (**** my English origins showing through there). have changed gear box oil though.

so it's true that the Evo cost more to maintain than other cars?

damn...I'll be spendin' 90% of my money on the car itself, so I don't have too much left. This could be a problem...

ummmmm, prolly not. From what I have heard the Evo is easy to maintain except for the AYC, and that shouldn't be TOO expensive. Everything else should be pretty easy to do yourself if you know anything about the way an engine works... the 4g63t is a pretty reliable piece of machinery, or at least as far as eclipse engines go. The only problem I have seen with Mitsu cars is their trannys, but the evo trannies seem to avoid the bad rep that other mitsu trannies have. I dunno, someone that actually has an evo might tell you otherwise, but It seems to me that a rally bred car should be pretty mechanically sound...

The AYC is a piece off **** to service, it normally takes me about 20 minutes to do. It is a simple fluid drop and replenishment.

Remove drain plug from AYC Diff and drain old fluid.
Refit drain plug.
Remove fill plug and fill AYC diff with genuine AYC fluid using a large syringe and pipe upto the lower level of the fill port.
Refit fill plug.

Job done!

Just make sure you use genuine AYC fluid, and fill the correct part of the rear diff, it is marked AYC fill and drain.

Well known misconceptions about this job are;

1) The fill port plug is hard to get at and remove. - Rubbish, anyone with minimal manual dexterity can do it easily.

2) The system needs to be bled after replenishment and this needs specialist equipment such as a MUT II. - Mitsubishi Dealers like to make you think this so that you take the car to them and they can charge you £120 to do a simple job that takes 20min, There is no need to bleed the system when you change the AYC fluid.

The only time you need to bleed anything is if you replace the actuation fluid, the resovoir is in the boot.
This fluid is ATF fluid and via the hydraulic motor, proportioning valve and directional control valve, actually actuates the clutch pack in the AYC diff, and proportions power to the wheels.
This fluid does not need changing unless there is a problem with the components in the actuation system. If there was air in this system it would cause hydraulic pump degradation. If needed you can bleed this system without specialist equipment. If you want to know how, mail me.

The AYC fluid is the fluid around the clutch plates in the AYC diff.
The reason the replenishment interval is 4500 miles is because with some earlier EVO 5's there was a problem with the AYC ECU software causing the AYC to activate incorrectly and cause premature wear of the clutch plates and make the AYC fluid 'dirty' which accentuated the wear.
Previous intervals for AYC fluid change were 25000 miles.
To my knowledge EVO 6's do not have the AYC ECU problem.

I have changed the AYC fluid in my EVO 6 every 10000 miles, and at 35000 miles I have absolutely no problems with the AYC.
