So why do you think Tiff Needle pixked the STi?

I would imagine most of you have seen the Top Gear STi vs. EVO video by now. It's clear to me that the EVO handled better than the STi, as expected. So why did he pick the Subaru in the end?

I mean, he is a professional driver, so I wouldn't think it would be better interior-type issues. What's your theory (other than calling him a loser )?

probably because he is old and the sti is a more refined ride. The other clips I have seen of him he is always driving the car that is racing up against the evo and loses so maybe he likes the underdog or something.

I think I remember him saying he chose the Sti because of the interior. I also think he is a Suby fan at heart.

This is a simple one... he hates the AYC and it's oversteering correcting ways. He loves to hang it out and that AYC is always meddling.

And oh, I could be wrong but he's frequently commenting about a car's ability to step out the rear end in his road tests, so yeah that's just a guess.

There's several objective reaons:

a) he's a *****

b) he got paid off by Subaru

But seriously, b) will be the correct answer. Motor journalists write as much as good as they get "paid" for. The payment is not necessarily money, but it may also be something that cost money and was used to do them good in one way or another ("test" car for private use, being treated like a king at the launch,...). I've worked with motor journalists at a launch, and let me tell you, they are the biggest scavenging cockroaches on the planet. Even if they write good things about the Evo. Don't believe the hype!!

P.S.: danc, it's Nedell not Needle...

After some searching, it looks like we were both wrong. It's Needell.

Yeah, I don't discount the paid off theory. He didn't explain how he came to that conclusion. It seemed fairly even-handed until that point.

Well I have the Top Gear Video on VCD and what Tiff says is "on first impression I'd go with the Sti".. he says it's really hard to tell apart which is the best on a wet track that you don't get to test all aspects of the car. I think he meant as an "overall" package Sti is better.

However, remember the good ol' top Gear Video Where Tiff tests the Tommi makinen with the P-1.. he says "P-1 is magnificient but the Evo VI TME is better!!.. and Vicki continues to say "that's what drove subaru boys to make the Sti VII"!!!

You have all missed the obvious reason - money. This video will appeal to Scooby and Evo drivers. For every Evo driver, there are 100's of Scooby drivers. If he went for the Evo, he would have vastly reduced the sales

Quite a few people in this thread seem to take what a mediocre racing driver who really didn't cut in F1 as gospel, or car journalists generally. Really, there's no reason to believe in what they're writing.

I think that is a very unfair statement to make, not to mention libellous.

Whatever the case, I feel that we don't need journalists or anyone else for that matter to "validate" the choice of one's vehicle to feel "secure".

Cheers.

What is libellous about the truth???? Which planet do you live on? The planet of "Tiff Needell, Racing God"??? That planet is VERY far away.... Tell me about his F1 "career" then... And what the hell is libellous about my opinion??? I could say Schumi is **** (don't like him, but he still is the best) and there's nothing libellous about that, go and talk to a lawyer, listen to what he/she says, then write again.
Or was it the bit about car journalists?? What exactly was libellous there then, Mr. Ph.D. in Law??
