Like the sound of Evo's and Wrx's?
So do i. My question however is one that me and my turbo'd civic friend have been trying to figure out for a while now. We don't know much about the wrx engine, but i know about the evo engine, and theres nothing there out of the ordinary with design. What creates the distinct exhaust tone put out by these engines. Especially the WRX engines. That choppy rumbly tone that could be replicated with a lancer by a non firing cylinder. Its just such a mean sound, i always thought that it was just WRX's due to the boxer engine, but i've heard countless evos make the sound. Its not the smooth exhaust tone that countless other turbocharged cars put out. Even in a stock form with stock exhaust the WRX engine as well as the evo make this choppy sound. Anyone know specifically what creates this?

ya the WRXs and STIs get that sound from there horizontally opposed engine, are you sure you heard an EVO make a similair sound? I don't own an EVO but a couple of my buddies do with after market exhausts and they all both have the "smoothed out" tone you mentioned.

Like i said, i dont know much about the WRX engine, so that could be the case. And i'm not around evo's enough to say that i heard it in multiple. The one i heard it in was about a year ago upstate when he passed me. Probably an upgraded camshaft like you said. So that solves it. Its due to the design of the WRX engine and its 90 degree to ground piston design

Oh lord. I don't know what to say or where to move this...
The Subaru sounds comes from being horizontally-opposed - the pistons move parallel to the ground, and the exhaust pipes are unequal length do to the routing of the exhaust. That causes MOST of the characteristic noise. If you use an equal-length header, the Subaru loses that characteristic rumble.
The Evo can sound choppy, but it'll never have the Subie noise.
