This appears to be a problem specific to DSM models only... not the Evo. Here's some discussions that RRE indexed for reading:

Unfortunately, 95-99 DSMs suffer from crank walk. Not all of them do. I have a 95 with about 63K miles on it and have'nt had any of those symptoms mentioned on RRE's CW page. I have been fortunate. There are some who will say that this only happens when you install an aftermarket clutch but, if the thrust bearings are bad to start with the clutch won't be the true cause, it may just accelerate wear on bad bearings. There are a ton of DSM'rs who can tell that they suffered CW while still using the stock clutch. Replacing those bearings and crank is a major job and expensive too. From what I have heard from ppl who know a good mitsu tech have said to replace the crank with "King" brand bearings. I just want to clarify that not all 2G DSM's suffer from CW.

Which brings up a good question(s). Since the 2G DSM's utilize the 4G63 motor, where did those motors originate from? Where was the 4G63 for the Evo manufactured? Will the US Evo have the 4G63 motor made by the same plant that supplied the DSMs? If mitsu wants to beat Subey's they better have solved that problem.

lets see...
thinking about this....im sorta glad i lost my eclipse in an accident... kinda funny thing is.... my engine was pretty much dead for pushing it all the time... my clutch was all f-ed up.... my cat had a hole in it... turbo was lagging like crazy... but then i got rear ended....hit something else...car was totalled...and i got money... and got a lancer... wow....if that whole crankwalk thing happened.... my car would have been completly worthless...and not the 12g i got from my accident.... but i do miss the turbo... lancer not having a turbo makes it seem real weak...

This is an issue that has been discussed before. Any car can get CW. I personally saw a 1G with CW at RRE. For more info on CW, do a search or visit: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/w...crankshaft.htm
