Why doesn't the new evo vii have a 6 speed tranny?

Remember, the time it takes to shift is a big factor in acceleration. If you have to shift 10 times to get to 120 mph, chances are the guy who only has to shift 3 times will beat you there even though you have more gears.

i remember hearing some interview on tv with a mitsu rep and he said that keeping the evo a 5 speed was a tactical decision for rally racing b/c it decreased the number of shifts made during cornering and that in almost all racing situations the 6th gear was rarely used. i don't necessarily agree with this, i'm just relaying the info.

6 gears don't necessarily mean 4 gears + 2 overdrive or 5 gears + 1 overdrive.
I believe the Subaru engineers have done a brilliant job with the ratios of its 6-speed.
It's been tested that the STi hits around 155mph at 7000RPM (redline 8000RPM). The theoretical drag-limited top speed is estimated around 160mph, so the top speed and engine redline is very nicely calculated to somewhat coincide.
I know other 6-speeds are designed with the 6th speed as overdrive; which means it's only usable for cruising.
Not true with the STi; the 6th speed is still very much alive and kicking. And that's what IMHO Mitsubishi should be aiming to achieve.

"2nd gear grind"..... you'll find about 16 pages worth of threads to
back up my statement... and that just from owners that actually visit
the s2k site...
It's a designe flaw like what WestSideBilly said... many owners had
their TSB done and still grinds 2nd gear...
(same for the clutch buzz)
More gears doesn't really mean good.. if the car has a wide powerband
it could actually slow down the acceleration times...
Anyways, hope that mitsu will make the right decision for EVO instead
of blindly try to match its competitors..

I think Honda fixed this in the 2003 models, and also comes with a rear glass window and an optional hard-top option.

Can get the svt focus with the same getrag 6spd in it too. Can get the Tiburon with a 6spd too. The Celica GTS, Matrix, and Vibe also have a 6spd. Wow I'm bored sure there are others for around 20k, like the RSX-S

Umm..ok, how about the '03 Cobra, WS6 T/A's, Camaros, Corvettes, Vipers, etc. They aren't peaky 4-bangers
BUT they DO benifit having a 6-speed....correct? The first 4 gears are geared for optimum perforfarmance more than a 5-speed would be
