well, ABS was invented for safety issues. IF you didn't have ABS, all your wheels would lock and your car would stay in a slide til it stopped. While with the ABS , i'm guess your Front brakes lock, while the REar ones don't. This will allow you to get out of a stall and maneuver your way out of danger...
i could be wrong, but that's my analagy on the subject... any more?

ABS works by making the calipers pulse on/off when it senses that the brakes are going to lock.
I don't like ABS. I don't think it adds any significant margin of safety, but an imaginary "comfort". Shorter braking distances are good. Yes, I'll agree to that. But- ABS has the soccer mom in mind, sucking on a latte, talking on the phone, changing the DVD in the in dash for the brats in the back, reading the paper, putting on her lipstick and doing everything EXCEPT driving.
So here's what I'm getting at. If you're a good driver to begin with, and you're not doing something you know is stupid, then you'll probably never need ABS or know it's there. You might want to try to lock the brakes, though, just to get a feel for the pedal "flutter"--- um, not in rush hour traffic, though, 'k?

kinda ditto what he said. abs that comes stock is not made for offroad use. get it but then get an aftermarket system to run it. i found one once that would also control take off. it was a universal kit and you can put it on any car that has or doens't hve abs and or traction control. its bout 1200 bucks plus install
