Lancer Engine Torque Damper Beta Release!

Hi, All,

I fitted up SpeedDemon and Ralliart50 with engine torque dampers this morning, and those guys should be chiming here at some point. I'm not sure that Ralliart will see a huge difference, since he's got an automatic, but SpeedDemon should - he's got the stick. We put his car in first gear with the brake off and rocked the car back and forth with the hood open to observe engine rocking. It sure was less than without the damper, but I'll leave it to him to say how well it translated into improved driving.

The Damper Kits will be on the website www.ZakleeCorp.com later this week, although I have to make some parts before I can sell them. I should have stock to sell in two weeks. Also, it's only for the 2.4 at the moment. If there's enough 2.0 interest, I'll make a kit for you folks, too.

Here are some pics of the kit. One is the kit on the floor. The others are installed on 2.4 Ralliarts. It's a little tough to see the goods, since it's a case of black on black, but you'll get the idea.

Hey quick question, what material is the damper made out of and what grade are the bolts used?

Moro -

The dogbone has polyurethane cast in its ends. The bolts are "hardware-store grade" 3/8" diameter - nothing exotic.

Danny - I think you can't get a stiffy for the Lancers.

Dragon - Probably stiffy-ish or less.

How does this compare to the Northstar damper that has had about 6 months of daily and track use and is becoming very popular over on SCLC?

Yeah, will this fit the 2.0l or can it be modified to fit?

Shingen - I have to fab up a different engine mount bracket. I have the design, I just need to get them made. Let's see how the 2.4 one goes for a while . . .

Ok, I've driven with mine for a few days now. When you look under the hood you don't even notice it's there unless it is pointed out. That's what I personlly wanted because I don't like a lot of stuff to jump out at you when you look at it. I like the clean look which this damper definitely gives IMO.

Performance wise, I have noticed a little bit of a difference in my drivetrain lash. I notice it a lot if I'm messing around in first and second gear. My engine doesn't slap as hard has it used to before we put this on. As far as wheel hop on take offs, I can't say too much about that because I have an auto and I think SpeedDemon will have some input on that. I do notice that my auto shifts up a little smoother and is a lot smoother on the downshifts when I punch the gas. I do not notice any difference at idle as far as extra vibrations or anything either. Once I get some more mods on I will be able to notice this even more. So far though it has done pretty good and would definitely recommend it to the 5-speed guys.

Rob,
I do have one suggestion though. You should definitely use a little bit stiffer polyurethane bushings on the dogbone. While the ones that you used do keep the drivetrain lash in check, I still noticed the lash a little bit more than I think it should be with this on.

All in all, I would give this product a 9 out of 10. If it had some stiffer bushings in it, it would be a definite 10. If anyone has any questions on this part let me know.
