okay progress pics,
well as you can see im getting a little frustrated the fact that my shifter with knob is only about 4 inches tall and the assembley is so close to the top of the hole is making for a difficult time
anyone got any ideas, im thinking like a sheet of black silicone or something now, just looking for something cleaner than ugly boot.

I've thought about doing the Ferrari-style Shifter before..
Its known as a "Gated-Shifter."
What I would suggest is, using Sheet-Metal (or hard plastic, if you have a Dremmel), since its maliable and thin; to create the shift slots.
Also 'cus you can cut Sheet-Metal really easily.
EDIT: I would measure the distance traveled from the center (Neutral) to the left, and from there-up into first,
and the same fro each additional gear, then draw out and cut the results thru a template.
If you dont want to re-upholster, then fasten the custom-gate from the bottom-side of the console, up. It'll be like a circular style gated shifter, instead of square.
They sell Gated-Shifter Kits, too btw... Google it

a ferrari is very precise along with a lamborghini, they were designed for the H pattern shifters. In the lancers and evo's, the shifter is 10 times less precise and 10 times less acurate then a lambo or ferrari.
I dont know if you've ever sat inside of either of those cars, but if you feel how the H pattern really works, then I think you would understand more, but even in the 355, I remember a freind of mine making the comment that the stem of the shifter doesnt even touch the walls of the plate.
neat idea though... Im interested to see how it turns out.

The gated shifters IMO were a pain in the behind. The gated shifters were regularly touching the sides and on multiple occasions when riding with customers who were not used to this, downshifted instead of upshifted, and led to a rather bumpy ride. At the track, the gated shifters were a pain in the butt because it would not be as smooth at high rpms and you would regularly miss a shift because the shift lever would hit the H part.

guys im trying and ive used about 1,000,000 pieces of cardboard (for a template), its a combination of things keeping this project from going anywhere
1. cant figure out to put the plate on top of the shifter and take the trim ring off or down inside below the trim ring
2. the mechanical plastic parts of the shift assembly are real close to the top making it difficult to get it positioned right and not see all the moving parts
3. lancers shifter even with my way too short shifter (under 4") is still a little sloppy
4. i've scratched my console up so much now i gotta paint it. been meaning to anyway.
and for these problems and the frustrations and cut up hands, im real close to giving up if i cant figure out something soon im gonna just design a shorter cleaner boot or maybe look for a rubber one and call it a day.
any suggestions or comments?
