ferrari shift boot, help

okay so i'm starting a little project for the shift boot, i hat the way the leather and the different fabric ones look so im going to fab up a plate like the ferrari's have and im looking for any help on this that can be offered im thinkining if i trace my shift pattern in card board i can then change to sheet metal, and cover it with vinyl or carbon fiber vinyl, black, or whatever.

any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated, included some pics to help get the idea.

i would leave the cardboard templet on there for a few days just to make sure you are giving yourself all the clearance you need.

i was wanting to do this on my civic way back. i believe someone have done this before and it didnt look good. i will try to look for the link.

the person who did the project cut a small piece of cardboard and traced the surround console. then taped it.

then he cut everything inside the pattern, for mitsu console obviously its a nice circle pattern.at this point you have a nice circle hole where you can see the shifter.

then he cut long strips of paper and laid on top of the circle pattern and he shifted every gear to see the clearance and moved the strip of paper for clearance.

when you finish each gear. he took out the pattern and re-traced it to the final pattern. and test fit again. then to the sheet metal.

Uh....the clearances and tolerances on the Ferrari shifter are considerably tighter than on a lancer and they require a rather specific shifting style. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you make the cover/pattern out of a thin enough metal that it can bend if necessary.

well i was gonna leave the cardboard for a couple weeks and see how much play is in it, im not comparing the lancer to the ferrari, just thought this would look alot cleaner than a boot, any other ideas amby? im open to suggestion

theres alot more play in our cars than Ferrari's have... Their shift is stiff and direct, its pretty hard to miss gears, it just slides right in perfect so they can get away with the plate... If you do decied to do it i would make the gapping as large as possible or maybe just make a shorter boot like how bmw makes their auto boots. there maybe 2 inchs of leather versus 10-12...

Cheers!

Another thing you must consider is how wide our shifter is compared to the thin ferrari shifter

yeah that wide thing is a problem, i've got a short shifter too and looks like there's not gonna be too much metal if i cut it and make allowance for shift pattern, stand by i will updated with pics when i figure out my alternative, maybe shorten my stock boot to a flat piece. im p!ssed, this is frustrating. . . . . any helpful suggestions?
