i wouldn't recommend the 18-200 ...

i'd say a nice fast zoom lens like a tamron 28-75 f2.8 or tamron 17-50 f2.8

faster aperture = more creativity in shots

and to be honest MP doesn't really matter..it's all a gimmick for companies to sell you cameras..

MP only matter if you are printing large pictures

nope..but faster aperture = faster shutter ..so no need for IS

how do i know what aperture to set at so that the entire car is in focus and just the backround is blurred. if i did a wide open aperture with my current lens f3.5 and the car is at an angle from the camera, then it seems like just the corner of the car is in focus and it starts to blur by the time it reaches mid length/rear doors.... would i want to set the aperture a little smaller to ensure the whole call is in focus, like f4.5 or f5?

you have to increase your depth of field to do this

which means you'd have to move further back and have a longer reaching lens to have the whole car in focus and have the background in blur...

I wouldn't recommend the 18-200mm lens either. Its nearly $700.
Your 18-55mm lens is great for wide angle and closeup stuff. For the zoom lens, you can go with the 55-250mm IS lens. Thats the one I got too, and it was only about $300. There's also the 70-300mm IS lens but again you're looking at over $700.

Honestly I would definitely recommend sticking with the IS lens, it makes a huge difference in lowlight conditions like dusk. Carrying a tripod around is a huge pain.

Yeah you're on the right track with that. Just keep narrowing the aperture till you find the entire car is in focus and only the backround is blurred.
