Sway bar end links, how tight?

I searched and didn't really find anything I was looking for, so when one installs their rear sway bar, how tight do you tighten the end link that goes through the control arm? I don't want to ruin the bushings or anything like that. Also, is the tightening supposed to be done with the rear end jacked up, or on the ground? I currently have about an eighth of an inch of thread showing under the control arm.

Do the work with the car jacked up, much easier to access everything.

If I remember correctly, the instructions I read said to tighten them until you can't turn the washers that sit above and below each of the rubber bushings with your hands.

Ahh, putting my old brain to work too soon after getting up.

I got an instruction sheet with mine. The NOTE for Step 3 states:

"After loosely assembling both end links, tighten the end links. Tighten the end link until you cannot rotate the cup washer by hand, then one more full turn. DO NOT over-tighten the end links!"

Love the change they made in the car (along with the front strut tower brace and Tein coilovers).

There really isn't a torque setting because you're not really tightening them all the way down. Rob (Rock) told me to tighten them until the bushings begin to visibly squish, and I had no trouble with my sway bars that way.

It doesn't really matter if you do this while the car is on the ground or jacked up, as long as both sides are the same (for example, you can't do it with one side jacked up and the other on the ground). As long as both sides of the suspension are equally compressed, the sway bar is at its relaxed mode. It only sees tension (actually, torsion) when one side compresses more than the other.

This is the proper way to tighten the stock end links according to the Mitsubishi shop service manual.

are you doing the stocker or the progress... if your doing the progress follow the instructions stating tighten until you can't turn the cup washer and then 1 full turn more.

If you doing the stocker then tighten as per the service manuel.

The bushings are different on the progress... they are better than the stockers.

Since I'm 99% sure you're using the Progress I sold you, don't use the service manual! The stock endlinks are completely different! Go with what Brian and scorp said.

Well I hate to say it Doug, but you're 100% wrong, you sold Matt the Progress sway bar, and me the stock one for the ES I had, remember I had an ES. Now I have a new 05 OZ that has a sway bar. I just popped the end links out to put the Deyeme bushings in, and also sold Alexandru the stock one you sold me. That's why I originally asked how tight to tighten the stock ones.

I guess we're all a bit confused here. Your original post didn't specify that you were talking about a stock anti-sway bar and with your profile showing that you drive an OZ it was assumed you were asking about the end links for the Progress bar.

On the positive side, here's one more thread for people to see how to attach an anti-sway bar.
