Check out Yokohama AVS Intermediate at www.tirerack.com They were on closeout last time I checked for about $55-75 per tire, and I know a lot of autocross, daily driver, and even classic mustang racers who love those tires. Plus, they are good for rain and have a good tread life. Too bad they're discontinuing them.

Also, a thought about the rubbing. Autocrossing will most likely have moments where your shocks compress completely, which will probably rub in the same way a large bump would. Redbeard, have you taken your car into a long, hard turn until you break loose and spin out in a parking lot? If so, does it rub the whole time until you spin? If you haven't and would love to have a little fun, do the R&D for us Working on the course, I can say a lot of cars make some horrible noises on the track, but a lot of them get better times than I do, so maybe the rubbing isn't a bad thing as long as it doesn't peel the rubber off.
