Got wheels now, need tires
Hey hey, I finally bought rims, and now Im tire shopping. I autocross sometimes, and need a good tire that will only be used in the summer. I was looking at the new Kuhmo Ecsta MX's, but they dont offer a 205/45/17 size. I would like to try and keep that size, unless anyone else has had luck with something else. I dont want rubbing. Also, Yokohama Prada Spec 2's are pretty cheap, and I read some good reviews for it at the Tire Rack. Anyone have these on their car? Remember, even though I autox, Ive only driven my car with stock yok's on it, so anything will be an improvement. Cost is an issue, I want to keep it under $120 bucks a tire. Thanks guys...

502's? 512's? Definitely not optimal tires for autox. Which Falkens? I'm happy with my 502's, but they SUCK outside of optimal conditions. They're ok in the rain and AWFUL in ANY snow(though I doubt you'd autox in snow), but they're above average on dry, warm pavement. I doubt the 512's are far off.
Azenis and Victoracers are considered some of the best tires in SCCA competition from what I've read. Sucks they don't have the Azeni sports in your size. I think they're gonna be my next tire if I end up getting 16's for track and winter use (assuming people get in on the freakin' Wilwood BBU GB ).

The Toyos are too expensive. Ok, heres the deal, I can get the Kuhmo MX's for 113 bucks, but I have to go with a 215 width. Now I can choose a 40 series or a 45 series, both of which have a .2 inch difference in radius from the stock tire. I think I should go with the 40 series, because the radis is smaller, therefore the tire is shorter and acceleration will be "theoretically" improved. Any thoughts? Also, anyone know of rub issues with 215-x-17 tires? (40 or 45 series)

I have 215/45/17's and I do experience some rubbing. A little in the front when turning the wheel all the way, and in the back when I hit a big bump. Go with 215/40, thats what I am going with this summer.

Autocross tire choice
Any of you guys who are autocrossing with 17 inch rims. Anyone running 215's, or is everyone have 205's? If your running 205's, which tires are you running. Thanks

I'm on 16 inch rims with 215/45/16 Falken Azenis tires, so this might not help all that much. Part of your tire selection depends on what class you're running.
For the street tire categories (STS and STX), The Falken Azenis (what I'm running right now) is one of the top choices, but I think they come in 225 width for 17 inch rims, which might require a little cutting to avoid rubbing. The other top choice is the BFGoodrich TA KDW (I think). I don't know what sizes those come in, but they are expensive too.
If you're not driving these tires daily, you could get competition tires and run in the Street Prepared Category (yet to be determined exactly which SP class the lancer will be in), which would include Khumo Victoracer, Hoosier (can't remember the model), and a bunch of other tires with a treadware rating of about 50-60. Those have a good selection of sizes, too.
most of these tires can be found at www.tirerack.com Hope that helped!
