New rotors, old pads?

Ok I was wondering if you can simply change the brake rotors and keep the same pads. I got a set of axxis brakes a while ago and they're perfectly fine, but I'm considering buying a set of slotted rotors.

I did. kept the hawk pads, and let them "re-seat" to the new rotors, no issue!

You can do it but It might not be the best idea. If you are going to pull out the rotor it would be very simple to change out the pads as well and you also won't have worn pads.

I'd say change the pad if it were a solid regular rotor; but since you've got the slotted, it should re-seat itself w/o damage to either item.

The old pads will cause an irregular wear pattern on the new rotors. Not a good idea imo. Besides, your rotors should outlive your pads, unless you warped them prety bad.

Yeah figured I might just get a set and let em sit around till I eventually replace the pads. Something tells me that'll be sooner than later if I start autocrossing in the summer like I plan to.

Eh, you really only drive a total of about 3-5 minutes in a day of autocrossing, so you'll be surprised at how well the brake pads hold up. Tires are a little different, though. But if you do canyons or track events, you'll wear them a little faster. I got sick of waiting for my stock pads to wear down so I just replaced them with Porterfields when they still had about 40% left.

Yeah I'll wait and see how it goes. I currently have the axxis ultimates and love em so in all likeliness I'll just get another set when my current pads wear down.

axxis ultimates are pretty good, but i'm getting tons of brake dust from them.

I'm also thinking of doing the same thing, how worn were your pads when you change the rotors? I've been told by several people that you should change pads as well as rotors, but really I think it has a lot to do with how much pad material you have left and whether or not your pads are worn.

smokedmustang, how far gone were your pads when you change your rotors? Thanks in advance...

You guys crack me up. Go ahead and change your pads but not your rotors, but don't be surprised if you end up with weird score lines on your brand new rotors and end up having to replace them yet again too soon.

Rotors are a much harder material than the pads, so I can almost guarantee you that they will last until your pads wear down. Why not just keep them until then? FYI, most of the wear done to rotors is done while turning them when you get new pads, NOT while driving. Think about it.

You could

Just have your old pads resurfaced, no point in wastin extra money,I did with new rotors no problems. Also depends on how much life is left on the pads.
