Rear Tie Bar

Any opinions on whether or not it'd be any good to put a Rear Tie Bar on our cars? Would it be in any way shape or form an alternative or a plus to a stiffer rear sway bar?

This is a tie bar... not a strut bar... it goes under the car and connects the bottom of the two struts together... not a strut bar that goes in the trunk... I don't konw what the 1.6 or 1.8 designations were... but if they say it fits a lancer... it should fit (another guy on this forum got one of the rear strut bars and said it fit perfect.. so they should be ok)

EDIT: after someone did some more research we now know that it apparently links the control arms :-)

here's what ROCK has to say. But, Pisetup (?) seems to like his rear strut tower brace... Then again, if it's only $40 could it really hurt?

Yeah it's kinda becoming for me a "well even if it doesn't help.. it'll impress the ignorant... and the knowledgeable I'll tell them that it was just to impress the ignorant.. "

At 44 bucks just having something shiny is like worth it Well maybe not totally... but if it makes even the smallest difference it could be worthwhile.

Ok. So Neuspeed makes one for the Civic (no surprise there). "Front tie-bar eliminates flexing at the lower control arm chassis pick-up points. The result is improved stability and handling."

There ya have it. Another way to reduce flexing and improve stability. Guess that's why race cars have a million bars crisscrossing all over the inside of the cars.

Sure. But the civic (?) strut mounting in that pic looks nothing like ours. Our struts mount directly into the rear arm and they look to be stiff as hell. Also, the rear sway bar mounts into the same arms... check out RRM's "OZ and ES suspension differences" article to see some pics of where things are going.
So, if I had to pick one, I'd go upper rear strut brace before rear lower tie, but either/both of those would come well after front strut brace and rear sway bar. Besides, our rear bumpers hang low enough that nobody will likely ever see the damned thing- not so good if you're trying to show it off. Whereas the civic always has its skirt in the air for everybody to see whats under there

I think the fact that Pisetup drives an ES may explain why he likes it so much. Without a sway bar stock (like you, Steve or eng) he probably has a bit more understeer from the looser rear. (Man, that sounds bad outta context, but I'm short on words and time.)

It may be picking up some of the slack that our stock sway bars do without our being particularly aware of it. For an OZ owner who gets a rear strut tower bar, try removing your sway bar. Then try with just the strut brace, then finally with both. I'm willing to bet the difference with both isn't huge compared to with just one (either or I suppose), but that the difference between either and none is huge.

Any thoughts?

So if we get the tie bar, rear sway bar and the rear top strut bar, we can have TIGHT REARS???? I told Booyah there was a way to fix that!!!

Andrew (HobieKopek) really has the exact right idea... and kind of what I plan to do in the next two weeks as my parts come in. I plan on trying to put in each mod individually and do a repeated test each time to get an idea to how much difference each makes. In won't be 100% scientific... but I'll be able to tell you if slaloming through parking spot lines improved with one thing or another basically. So I'll try and give you guys some kind of "report" based on sway bar, strut bar, rims, brakes, and springs. And if I decide to drop money for the tie rod or upper rear strut bar I'll include those too. What i do know is that I'll have a rather differently handling car in just over a week and a half.

But it is certainly a good idea to try comparing the no bars, just sway bar, just tie bar, and tie and sway to see how they all effect things.

Will the same thing work on girls? If we spend the 40 bucks on a tie rod... 40 bucks on a strut bar, and 170 on a sway bar and she ends up with one sweet tight rear... I'd spend it

here is a pic of the tie bar installed....ours is smaller than a civic tie bar because the bolts from the arms come closer together...I have an ES so coupled with the top rear bar, I can feel a difference. I'm gonna paint it blue soon....then it won't be so visable.
