Might be a rock stuck in the suspension.

Well, your car is now 5 years old... could the shocks be dead? Tophats worn out? Loose nut? You just gotta check around...

It's not the lack of swaybar, so don't worry about that.

get back there with a wrench and tighten every bolt and nut you see that has anything to do with a moving suspension part. It helped my front stop rattling.

Yeah, just get it checked by the dealership. If you're not that knowledgeable, you're not going to be able to find/diagnose/fix a problem when you get under there.

Well, if you want to learn, you probably want a knowledgeable friend to help then. If you just lay under the car and look around, there's about a 5% chance you'll solve the problem yourself.

The key is that you want to learn - you need a teacher.

Re; suspendtion problems on my es

I agree I would check all suspension mounting bolts, another thing I would look into is maybe the rear wheel bearings? That could possibly cause some knocking. As far as the sway bar goes, I recommend getting it. Night and day difference on the wifes car( 03 ES)!!!! Plus those guys over there at RRM are really helpful

How is the handling since you noticed the noise? The handling on my 03 ES went from good (with the Road///Race sway bar) to kind of clunky and bumpy and, well, noisy. I'm not saying your noise is definitely the dampers, but that's what my knocking noise was. I was hoping that maybe it was just the wires from the new taillights I got recently rattling around, needing to be secured. Today I had it looked at in the shop where I work and both my rear struts are leaking. yay...

If it's Misubishi you spoke with then they can probably only sell you factory parts. So, what they probably mean by "a couple suspension dampers" is "do you have an ES or an OZ?" Not to flame on you, but if you do a search, you'll find that in 2002 and 2003, the Lancer had two available suspensions. There was the ironically less produced base ES Lancer suspension, and there was the more common OZ/LS suspension. I say ironically because this is one of the few cars that they made more of the "performance" version of than they did the "base" version. Other than suspension and bolt pattern, the two are basically the same. Same engine, same output.
