so as far as tire width, what's the widest you would be able to fit with a 17x7, +42 offset? would 225/55/17 work? I basically don't want to sacrifice ride comfort too much, and have heard the 40/45s give you a good jump when you hit road lovelies, which we have everywhere in the north

jwick, remember that there is more than just offset to worry about when asking about rubbing. the tires you are looking at: 225/55/17 are FAR too large in diameter over stock and will probably rub at any offset. with that tire it is about 2.6" bigger in diameter than the stock tires, making about 10% difference on your speedo and causing other issues.
on a 17" rim you are much safer with 205/45/17 since they are very close to stock diameter. you lose a little width and some sidewall, but it's necessary to have it match oem specs.

ah, so the 225 is just too wide for the wheel well/strut clearance on all four wheels..gotchya.
And to go the opposite end of the spectrum, has anyone found 13" rims and wheels that will work with the brake setup on the stock lancers? I was going to stick with the stock rims, but have two with some serious rash on them (NEVER let people drive your car, even to change parking spots). Tirerack doesn't sell any, and i've been looking around and only finding 4x100 bolt patterns. Anyone try these, and if so, what works? Just wanted to explore the lightweight/quick spooling options...

i believe the front discs require a 14" minimum rim, assuming it has the right inside profile for caliper clearance. I thought it was 15" minimum but remembered that the es/ls came with the 14" rims so i guess 14" is minimum you could go for fitment with the brakes.
most brake upgrade kits require 17" rims for fitment. like the baer or brembo packages. so if you plan on upgrading the stock brakes, then be wary of small rims if you will get a big brake kit

^^just to confirm, my snow tires are on 14" rims. Yeah, I was wondering about the 13" clearing the calipers...all of the racing 13s I've found so far are 5-bolt pattern...I imagine some custom wheels could be made, but I'm not really that excited enough to pay for them:-p

I take it back, just found some... HEREhttp://www.needhp.com/index.php?main...roducts_id=568
so this is odd, they give offset in inches...how does this convert to our positive offset?

hey jwick this site might help you http://jeep-forums.4wd.com/showthread.php?t=13876 i saw the rims on the site you posted... some 15 rims would look nice in a low offset on the lancer... now what would the lowest offset we could fit on a 15 inch rim on a lancer prolly 7 or 8 inch width??/
