Unhappy 16" wheels ruin brakes on the GTS???

I spoke with another GTS owner, and they said they spoke with the parts dept at Mitsu and the rep said that putting "16's on the GTS will ruin the brakes . I have already bought my steelies and now i'm wondering if this is true. They told the rep that a couple of people have already got 16's on there rides, and the rep said "they will regret it once winter is over" Someone please clarify before I change my mind and try to sell off the steelies

I would love to hear the logical argument to support such a theory.

about the closest thing I can think of is that maybe running less tire width will result in worse braking?

yeah it beats me why they would say that as tons of cars have 16s and big brakes also. only thing i could think is that snow and stuff can get stuck in there between the brakes and wheels and stuff and make them rust or not cool properly. i dont see why else it would matter as long as there is no clearance issues. they probably just want you to buy another set of 18s from em or something, stupid mitsubishi dealers.

I doubt you (or anyone else) are going to have any problems on a GTS as long as the overall tire & wheel diameter for the 16" is the same as the 18"...which just means fatter tires in the 16" s

I'm running 16" steelies for my winter wheels, and I have had zero problems so far (actually, the ride is a lot more comfortable - hooray for giant sidewalls ).

Sounds like the dealer was assuming that 16's wouldn't completely clear the calipers and are handing out unsubstantiated info.

I rolled 16's for a little over a week when my rims were off getting powder coated. ran just fine. caliper clearance on the steelies was just fine. trust tire guys for tires, and car sales men to screw you.

i thought the brakes were the same for all 08 Lancers?... DE, ES, GTS…breaks should be identical if i’m not mistaken…

i have a DE with the disk brake upgrade…i was originally on oem steelies…now i’m on aftermarket 16s…zero problems with contact.

I got 16" cheapy aluminums just in case I have to clear snow off the rotor I can get my hand in there through the rim but as for clearance there is a couple inches and I've been driving with them since 15 October and no problems at all.

Wrong. But you can still fit 16s on a GTS.

This story is utter BS. Plain and simple. The dealership wanted the guy to buy 18" tires so they could make more money.

Why would the spare tire be a 16 if the others are 18? What happens when you pop a tire on the freeway, and have to change your 18 for a 16...are you going to drive lopsided?
