Need Help On Tire Choice

Hi. I have a 2002 Lancer es and have started autocrossing this year. I need new tires and i am having an impossible time finding any good autocross tires that will fit the stock wheels. I have a second set of stock wheels to put these tires on so i dont need them to serve any other purpose but for autocrossing. I would buy different wheels but i definetly want to stay in stock class. I have searched forums, tirerack and have talked town fair tire. After all this searching the conclusion I have come up with is that nobody makes high performance tires for this size wheel. I just wanted to ask you guys whether this is true. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The bolt pattern is 4x100 and they are 14" in diameter. The stock tire size is 185x65x14

Why does your profile say 2003 evo? Anyways, get rid of the 14" steelies and buy a lightweight set of 15" rims. You can then run almost any tire you want like RT-615s or RE01Rs.

^ he wants to stay stock. Could you get away with stock OZ wheels ? Its still a stock lancer wheel. they are 15 inch and then youd have options.

OZ has a different bolt pattern, the only way he can get larger rims is if he goes aftermarket.

The only two options we have in 14", tire wise, are Sumitomo's HTR200 in 185/65-14 and the Yokohama ES100 in 205/60-14.

Yeah the tire options for 14" wheels are pretty small. The market for 14" performance tires is even smaller. Most cars with 14" tires are... exactly what the lancer is designed to be... an economically friendly grocery getter. Unfortunately that's what we have

The reason that my profile says i drive an evo 8 is because this is my dads username and he drives an evo. I was told by somone that i could run 195/60/14 on stock steelies. Is this possible? If it is this would be great because they make alot of good tires in this size like the Falken Azenas

I agree with Amby... if you want to do some auto-cross, you should definitely look into getting a set of 15 inch wheels. I'm sure you can find a good package deal for wheels and tires. There just isn't a strong market for performance or auto-cross tires in 14's, so there isn't much to choose from.

Do the rules of stock class allow you to change tire size (ie. run something other than 185/65/14)? Realistically you're not going to be competitive in stock class since a 185/65 tire will suck at autocrossing, it's a tiny contact patch and a giant sidewall. You're better off moving up one class and running decent tires rather than squeal your way around in stock class.

I got it! buy some 16 or 17 inch steelies!

no one will ever suspect aftermarket... steel wheels...

Lots of awesome tire choices for these sizes.

why not just switch to a street prepared class?

it's hard finding good tires for 15"s to race on. my race tires are 16"s and my friend's are 13" or 14"s.
