Brake dust shield .... Important?

I just changed out my brake pads with the RRM Axxis pads and was wondering something. How important is the dust shield that sits behind the rotor and caliper? I'm wondering this because on my other car I just got, the dust shield rotted through and basically fell off while I was taking everything off.

I removed it on my ITR to improve cooling cuz there's almost no way to install any brake air duct in that car......I have it remove for over a yr and didn't notice any problem

Few things I may worry off my head after remove the dust shield is the heat from the brake may cause damage to the abs sensor and the lower balljoint......as well as stuff may slip into the caliper but as i mentioned above I have no problem on my ITR.

BTW.....if you don't track the car I don't think it worth to do it at all.

The only reason why I was curious is because as my signature shows, I just bought a 1988 Nissan Pulsar, and the brake dust shield on one side rusted through and fell off. I figured if they were important, I could make one using aluminum and bolt it up with the caliper bracket. After doing some research I decided they aren't important (for this car at least) so I just cut the drivers side one off as well.

Thanks for the input though, and enjoy the EVO
