brake question

Does anybody know what the pieces are called that hold the brake pads from moving. they go on the top and the bottom of each break pad and it keeps them stable. I took my car to midas to get my brakes from squeeking and after that i started hearing a rattling noise. Come to find out midas lost some of those pieces so know my break pads make noise everytime i hit a bump. I've been trying to replace the piece but i dont know what its called or where to get it. Please help me.

i dont know what those pieces are called but i do know that squeaking from time to time can be normal, my evo does it every now and then, but the dealer told me it was normal. did you call midas and ask them what they were thinking?

I believe they are called "brake pad shims", most mechanics just use silicone to glue them the pistons to prevent them from rattling.

I always called them clips. Mine got bent thanks to a defective pad, so I plan on ordering new ones the next time I do my brakes.

moving to suspension tech

That's what I call them too. Shims go between the pad and the caliper to help eliminate squeal (brake squeal is caused by the pad vibrating on the caliper). The shims help stop or absorb the vibration. The clips that sound like your missing help hold the pad strait in the caliper. Some cars have pins that go thru the pad, some just clip on the caliper, and other have little wire clips that hold them in. I imagine this is a part your dealer can get for you. Heck, if the brake place lost them have those guys buy new ones.

They are definately called shims, I just bought them at the dealer when I replaced my pads. I had a questions for you guys, I hope that you can help. I only have 35K miles and the f****** pads on the drums are almost gone! The guy at mitsu told me that they should not be worn out yet, but that is was probably due to the fact that I did not come in and "have them adjusted". Does anyone know what the hell the guy is talking about, how do you adjust the pads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe the pads got out of alignment and wore unevenly??? I haven't seent that problem before. I did have them inspect them at 15k though, and plan on upgrading my shoes and pads soon anyway. While you're on the market for new shoes, I found out Porterfield makes drum shoes in the same carbon/kevlar compound as their brake pads from RRM. Just in case you wanted to upgrade your braking performance while you're at it.

Okay they are called shims, good now i know what to get. Cause mine have been making noise for some time now. And me thinking it was the rotor the whole time.

"Adjust your breaks".... First you gotta make sure that when you change your breaks you adjust the drums in the back. If you don't alot of strain goes towards your pads in the front. You'll start to notice this when you just changed your breaks about two weeks ago and your brake pedal goes down too low. Also, when you break and you feel your steering wheel rattle a bit more than usual.
this happened to me so instead of gettin them fixed anywhere else, i just went to a Auto Zone and bought a Drum Break adjuster, special tool specially for foreign cars like ours.

now i don't have any problems, except for the one i recently posted in this Thread.

As urban said, the little metal pieces on the top and bottom of each pad are called clips. Shims, which everyone else seems to think your talking about, go between the pads and caliper body / piston.

From the US Lancer Service Manual:

Mine has clips but now shims. My definition is that shims are plates the entire size of the pad going between the caliper and the pad. Clips are small and just guide the pads into their place.
