Are you saying that Fram oil filters are no good because you can't find a wrench to fit them?

You dont need a filter wrench to put them on, just to remove them. You dont even need it to remove it. You can just use a channel lock to get it off. If you dont have a channel lock then jab a screw driver through the side of it and un-screw it (not like your going to be using it again anyways). Make sure when you install a oil filter to put some new oil on the seal before you install it.

Ok, I guess I will just have to run a test. My next oil change I will use Fram Oil filter with Castrol GTX and then Castrol GTX + Napa oil filter and then take pics of oil after 2k miles.

Ya but the darker oil doesnt nessessarly mean that its not doing its job, it just means that its collecting more carbon and other things. Oil is suppose to darken, this is why you change it. But Use what seems best for your car.

Plus, I'd assume between both your changes the driving conditions weren't in all ways identical. Good idea, but good luck with the examination...

I too hate Penzoil...used once and never will again.

First not all cars use the same design or manufacturing tolerances in oil pumps. So comparing results from other vehicles to a Lancer doesn't make much sense. Second the problem we have is primarily the manufacturing tolerances. This means there may be people who can run synthetic in the particular Lancer they own and never have any problems. However, there are also people who cannot run synthetic in thier car because they got an oil pump on the loose end of the tolerance. Yes synthetic oil is a very good lubricant(far superior to conventional oil), but it is the increased "slipperyness" of synthetic that can give these poorly constructed oil pumps problems. To date I have had no indication that my engine will fail, but I do know my oil pressure drops too low. I have not had a chance to get my oil changed yet, but when I do I will keep you guys posted.

FYI here is the thread where I got most of this info:

The only way to tell if your oil is holding up is to do a test. Go to blackstone-labs.com
it will cost you about 30 bucks.

To me that sounds like poor quality control.
