Manual tranny fluid
#151
Alright, I am quite the genius. I just did my tranny and put in mobil 1 but it is a GL5. Can someone please tell me if I can drive on this?
The manual says GL4, but I would like to know why a GL5 would hurt the car. Thanks!

GL5 is too slippery. The synchros won't be able to grab the cones like they should, and you'll end up grinding more gears than you would with GL4. They need a bit of friction in order to work properly.

thanks for the quick response. so is this the kind of thing where i cannot drive the car until i change it? or can i go a few days without damaging it?
this is good to know for all you guys currently running the mobil 1

It won't hurt it to drive it one day with GL-5 in it. Give it a try. You might be lucky like comatose and not have any problems.
Or, you might be like me and change your fluid one week, and your tranny the next.
I'm not blaming the demise of my old car's tranny on the Mobil1 synthetic gear lube I put in it, it was the 214,000 miles that it had on it that killed it.
I had noticed the gears getting crunchier, and tried to buy some time by changing the fluid. Wouldn't you know, the next week, work sends me to another facility, 100 miles from home. Tranny was making BAD noises as I got off the freeway and onto the surface streets a few blocks from my destination. I worked there for a few hours, then waited in a nearby Denny's for traffic to thin out (South Chicago is not a good place to have a balky tranny). I babied it the few blocks to the onramp, every gear giving a death rattle as I sped up except 5th. 5th gear was perfectly fine, so I stayed in 5th until I coasted the car into my driveway. I blew through the tollbooths, and crept my way -still in 5th- through the few stop signs between the freeway and my house.
I called my boss as I drove past work and told him my tranny was dying and that I would be in tomorrow, after changing the tranny.
So yeah, I might be a little jaded against Mobil1 synthetic gear lube...

wow good thing your car made it back. i know how chicago traffic goes
hopefully it will last a day or two. what got me was that I read this thread and decided to just do mobil 1 because shipping to my apartment is really confusing. the guys looked up my car on the computer at checker auto parts and said that the mobil 1 was exactly what i needed. i'm going to try to get a refund out of this

Check out my post above about Red Line MTL Gear Oil... You won't regret it... Ebay has it if you can't find it locally... There are some pictures posted regarding the drain bolt and fill bolt... I used a funnel with a short piece of clear vinyl tubing.... fill it with about 2.5 qts, then go really slow... when it starts leaking out past the bottom of the threads of the fill hole you're done. Just wait until it's done draining out of the fill hole, then replace the bolt and tighten.... A few hundred miles later your shifting will be so much smoother it's unreal... Email me if you need any more answers about the Red Line MTL Oil..... Just over $30 shipped on Ebay...
isnt it redline mt-90..not redline mtl

Make sure you do fill it on a flat surface. If the car leans one way or another it may start pourring out later than it would have if you'd have been on a flat surface.
do not overfill it
You'll only be putting a small portion of the 3rd bottle. Remember that when you fill it.
Props for reading the whole thing. I did that a while ago and it took me soo much time. So many contradictions in this thread, we should start a new one with only the proper info
