Is it a TRACTOR or an OZ?

My car sounds like a tractor

http://www.lovehorsepower.com/Subaru...terReplace.htm
This link has a video and mp3 where you can get some kind of a hint what it sounds like.

It all started after swapping the pistons for NA high compression forged aluminum pistons. The guy who installed the pistons is not giving me the answer when he could check things out so I'm stuck paying for everything myself.
(link to where I got stuff installed https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...25#post2173125)

After waiting for a month I'm going to let AMS in Illinois check things out for me. I already checked the valve lash adjusters and they are really hard like they are supposed to be. It took me a long time to finally get my car fixed mainly because of the whole mess with setting up an appointment to check out my car with the guy who installed the pistons. Boeturbolancer had a chance to listen to my engine and he said it sounds like "$hit".

I'm really apset at this time and hope things will be fine ASAP.

I will keep you posted. If anyone knows what could be making that sound please post. The only thing that will work is Valve Medic by Gunk. But it is only for about 5mins.

Yeah, you should hear it when I put it in a gear and try accelerating. TURBO DIESEL!!!

I'm trying to make it sound funny but I'm really

After the whole day checking out every single page about ticking/tapping/knocking/noisyvalvetrain/tickingvalves/valvelashadjuster/hydraulicvalves I found a lot of causes of the tractor noise. But because Valve Medic is working for a little bit I can only assume it has something to do with the valvetrain. Right now the best solution is that the preload is not set correctly. The worst part I guess would have been the rod bearings.

So it still makes the noise when warmed up?

Couple of things to try: a little oil poured through the spark plug sockets onto the pistons (about a teaspoon). If the noise quiets down- bam pistons problem.
If that doesn't work I have good news and bad news. Good news is our lifters are hydraulically self adjusting. Bad news is your mechanic didn't know that and now you get to get your hands dirty. Let the car cool down because this REALLY sucks when the engine is hot. As it is it's just going to suck a little and take about 45 minutes your first time. Take off the valve cover, loosen the rocker arms just enough that the lift adjusters start to fall out. I use a magnet to pull them out. take a straightened paperclip and while holding the adjuster with the hole down, poke the hole a little to get the oil to come out. Don't jam the clip in there, but just release the pressure inside- you should be able to squish the adjuster a little with your fingers. do this to all 16 and reinstall. Start the car and wince for a couple minutes while the adjusters refill with oil. The really loud noice should subside and be replaced with the moderate noise we've all come to know and love from our G94 lifters

good luck

Damn, is that the new OZ Diesel edition?
Honestly man, sounds like a bearing going on you.

It's a new diesel edition of a Lancer.

We will see how is going to laugh when I will put some corn oil in my tank

By the way I doubt it's a bearing. The noise comes from the top of the engine (valve cover) and Valve Medica fixes the problem for a little bit. I will disassemble the rails with rocker arms and I will do what E-boy is suggesting.
I already took out the valve lash adjusters but they were really hard, probably locked.

Alchemist, Rock, Boe, Rhyzin, please read:

Today I finally had some time to follow Alchemist's directions to fix the stupid "diesel" noise from my engine.
Took off the valve cover.
Rocker assembly.
Lifters.
Bled the oil inside the lifters.
All of them were sort of easy to press on after sticking a needle in the hole.
Reinstalled everything triple double checking each thing and lubricating everything with oil.
Before starting the car I have changed my oil from Penzoil (5W-30W) to Mobil 1 synthetic (5W-30W) and a new filter.
I have started the car, it runs like a TANK!!! So freaking loud and my motor is shaking like crazy. WTf???
Oh well, left it for a little bit to idle.
Took it around the block and dang it still sounds like a tank and has no power to pull anything.
Idle aroun 400rpm and shakes.
Oh, yeah I forgot to connect the little plug to one of the coils!!!
DUMBA$$
At least now I know how a car sounds when it is knocking. LOL

Anyway,

THX a lot Alchemist for giving me the info how to fix my problem.

IT DID HELP!!!! I almost didn't recognize my car, it WAS so quite.
WAS?
Yes, the noise seems to be coming back.

HELP

Should I upgrade my lifters to solid ones from Mirage or is there a problem with valve/piston clearance? I don't think it's knocking. Rod bearings should be fine since the noise stopped for a while. What's going on???

It may be a "lazy" lift adjuster, but it'll be hard to say which one. I would try replacing the 4 for the piston that sounds worst. OR replace all 16 and be done with it.

It may be something else, but I don't have any other ideas if bleeding the adjusters worked.

It seems like it worked for about 30mins. And now the noise is slowly coming back. I haven't started my car ever since but in couple of hours I should have some info.

My biggest concern is if this could be related to timing?

At exacty 3-3.5rpm the engine is running super quite. No noise from the valvetrain.

I really need to take care of this or else I will have to buy a 8in muffler to cover up the valve noise in the winter.

well a little ticking should be expected. if it's just a little, revving up to 3k slowly and holding it for awhile should get rid of it, temporarily...

if it's getting loud again, then it's probably just a bad lifter and go with alchy's post. or maybe clean them. but sounds more like a leaking lifter than a gunked up one.

Has the only change to the engine been the pistons?

Has the piston to valve clearances been checked Ie are the valves hitting the pistons, has it been timed correctly. The fact that the noise went away initially and is coming back once hte lifts bled up again tells me that its more than likely not the lifts. They woudl have been extremely noisy when you first started them after bleeding them up and then quitened down as they pumped themselves up again

But if the noise is coming back its not he hydrualic lifters.

I just came back from my girl friend's house. The stupid noise partially went away. It's still noticable on idle and low rpm but it's almost totally gone at high rpm!

THX Mitsiman for checking out this thread.
MODS: fuel pressure regulator (40psi), Cold air intake, 10:5.1 pistons, ngk plug wires, one step colder plugs, and not tuned hks super afr.
The guy that swapped the pistons in my car have checked the timing at least 5 times, at least that is what he have told me.
He have also told me that the pistons/valves clearance is fine.

What can I do to check if my timing is fine and pistons/valves clearance?

When I started the car after bleeding the lifters the car sounded really loud and then it got really quite. The noise coming from the head got reduced by like 60% after bleeding the lifters.
