I had the same problem, 1st off do not try and turn it, if you break the switch it will cost about 500-1000 to replace. I will try and describe as best as I can if you have any questions let me know had the same problem and it was a 15.00 fix literally!! On the drivers side look down under the dash where your heating and a/c box is there is the wire that comes from the knob that connects into a plastic disc. If you move that disc manually it will move the flapper (from heat to cool) you will see that it was poorly designed and keeps hanging up. Take the part off and go down to mitsubishi and get a new on. I can not for the life of me remember what it is called!! Anyway the cable unclips and you can remove both pieces. The charge like 14.95 for the part at any mitsu dealership. Just replace it and you should be good to go.

It is that easy
It is that simple as long as you have not broke the base of the knob. I tore the whole control unit apart and learned the hard way when I had to buy a whole new unit because I broke the tabs off. The control unit still worked but it did not sit will with the tabs snapped off. But basically yes that is all you need to do. If you look under there while you try and turn it you will see how it binds. If you push it down there manually you can switch from heat to cool. Like I said take a look and you will understand.
