iPod/Mp3 cable for 08 lancer question

I just got my lancer about a month ago, and I have been to the dealer about this, but they didn't really know. I have the DE, with the standard sound system. They tell me that you can hook up the cable to this system. The thing is that it is $50, and if it really just an AUX input on the back of the radio, why is it that much. Just wondering if any one else had bought this acc.

Check the pocket area on your console. See if there's ports for audio input. If so, just go buy the cable at BestBuy or CircuitCity, etc.

Yeah, I thought that at first too, but no luck, I am under the impression that if you can hook it up, it must be in the back of the radio some where.

Not sure. I'd try and check my car, but I have the RF system so we're working with different components.

There is an MP3 accesory cord that can be purchased thru the dealership that will match up with the 2008 Lancer. You have to purcahse the cord thru the dealership and then have it installed by the dealer. The reason being because of the new highspeed bus that mitsu is using, you have to recalibrate the system to recognize the cord.

Can anyone confirm if this is true?
There's this tutorial on installing the mp3 cable yourself...

So I'm just wondering why would they be claiming it needs to be taken in to the dealership.

thanks

You're in Edmonton so therefore I'm thinking that you have a Canadian Lancer so you should have a AUX output just behind your ashtray. It has a black cover and I know the lighting sucks in our cars so just shine a flashlight in there. Then go to Walmart and buy a cable for $20.

Because the average car customer has no clue how to do simple things like remove the radio. So they don't want morons destroying the car, especially when they can be charging $80/hour to install it!

Yeah I agree with that. The thing I was wondering was if what he was saying about calibrating the system to accept the mp3 cable was true.

Thanks all

That tutorial shown above is what i did. I bought the cable from the dealership for $50. Installed it myself and it works like a charm. I also have no sound system addons. Just please before you buy it if you are going to press and hold the CD button for about 5 seconds and see if the aux display will show up. If it does than go buy that cable and enjoy ur mp3 player.

Was this ever confirmed as true? I'm wanting to splice into the wiring harness adapter but not gonna cut up my good RCA > headphone cable if it has to be "calibrated".
