Loose Shifter
Hey guys I was hoping some of you could possibly help me out.
I started having a problem with my shifter. It is very loose. I don't know how to really describe it other that there is alot of play in the shifter. If i put the car in 1st and fail to keep my hand on the shifter holding it in possition it will slide out of gear. Once i'm moving the car will stay in whatever gear I am in. But, the shifter has 3 to 4 inches of play in other words the shifter will move around while staying in gear.

I appologize my line art skills suck. Each of the gears numbers are where the shifter engages that gear. Each 'o' is where the shifter comes to rest when i'm driving. Each 'x' is the normal path of the shifter.
I hope this doesn't lead to more confusion.
Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Check all your bushings as well as the cable brackets. First, look at the ones under the hood under your intake. Then, follow the cables back through the firewall and check the ones under the console. The rubber has probably disintegrated causing the play. It's worth the time to look into it-- the fix is probably a $2 bushing.

I would check the bushings, make sure all the cables are attached to the tranny with the proper clips and its connected to the shifter. Also, there are clips that hold the cables down near where they connect to the tranny. If they come loose, they'll move everywhere. Make sure the cables are attached at the firewall gromett.
