Downpipe cover?

Downpipe cover?
My car hit high center the other day and this is the results.... I looked at it and its looks like its a case or cover over the downpipe but I'm not for certain, no air or anything comes out when I start it up.
I was wondering if this is a problem and if so how much would it be to get it fixed? I had been thinking about a new exhaust for a while but haven't had the extra money yet. Also wondering what the wire mesh type thing is? I think its just a connector but I could be wrong, so if anyone could please help me out I would greatly appreciate it

Others can confirm but I think that's only a heat shield. Don't worry about it.
To make sure it actually is a heat shield, shove a screw driver up the hole and see if you hit the actual pipe inside. Mark the screw driver to know how deep you went in, and compare the mark to the overall diameter of the pipe. If the screw driver goes in for, lets say, 1/4" before you hit something, then it's a heat shield. If it goes in 2", then get it fixed. You may even get away with exhaust tape.

I wouldn't worry about it. My stock downpipe had a split like that too on the heat shield. I'm not even using the shield on the evo downpipe so it reall is of no concern. The "wire mesh thing" you refered to is a flex section in the downpipe. It makes the pipe capable of moving and twisting slightly as the motor shifts.
