Rx7 Or An Evo??

ok ok, i know this is an Evolution forum, but i just wanted to know what people think of the rx7 compared to the evo??

if you did not own an evo at this moment...and had an rx7(93-95 fd) near you for about 16g bone stock with 45XXX original miles and a rebuilt motor with about 3000 on that...which would you choose??

i'm asking this because i have been thinking about getting one of these and i wanted to know what you guys thought of the FD!

I think that having a engine rebuilt at 42K miles is not a good sign... I like rx7's however.. they are nice rides... the other question is the price... if 16K is important, I dont think you will find a Evo for that price, unless it is ragged out...

rare cars.... they have a history of being unreliable, but if you were to take care of it, i think ud be fine. Before i bought my evo, 300zx/mr2 turbo/and the rx-7 were my main choices........

when i stated 16k...i just wanted to state the price of it, not saying that i cant afford and evo or anything.

the point i was getting to was do you like the rx7 more, about the same, or less than the evo and why??

thanks,
-mike

I personally love the RX7's and I wanna get me one to go with my Evo before I'm much older. I think that is you've never learned to DRIVE they can be great to learn with. They offer a lot of experince and can be a little cheap to upgrade and repair then your adverage Evo. If you just looking for a show car well the Evo is a great toy. I personally race and so both cars are very different but the RX7 can teach you a lot that you can't nessesarly learn in a evo. Sorry for any bad spelling.

No worries, I wasnt implying anything... I dont pretend to know , I just wanted to point out that when you compare apples to oranges, and the oranges cost more... than it could make the apples seem better... < ~~ I am so stupid...

ok for real now... I love the Evo, but the RX7 would be a better car to rag out, if you are not used to having a light weight sports car.

an engine rebuild at 42k miles in an RX7 can be a good sign or a bad one...if the RX7 isn't driven hard (a redline a day keeps rotary problems at bay), then the apex seal may not be properly lubricated and can blow, casuing a loss of compression. Unlike a boinger's headgasket, a rotary engine requires a rebuild when the apex seal blows. Apex Seals also can blow with a single episode of detonation, so abuse can also lead to the seal's demise.

find out how old the driver is / how the car was driven. ive worked on an FC motor that blew because the woman who owned it never drove it hard...one day she started it up and boom, no compression.

RX7s are hot, and rare...taken care of, they can be reliable enough. They really are a great platform, but you have to decide if you want to sink nearly 20 grand into a car thats over 10 years old, with no warranty, and an unknown history. Of course, you would have the privledge of driving what I believe to be one of the finest factory cars ever, a master in handling, aesthetics and (the potential for) power.

just my $.02 feel free to PM me with any other questions

Awesome car! I wouldn't have minded one if I wasn't worried about the reliablility. 42K with a blown motor doesn't sound too bad considering the how easily the motors went anyway. Check on the rebuild and see what they did to the motor. If its just a stock rebuild, you might pop it again as soon as you mod it. But if its a strong rebuild it could make for a good starting platform.

I have had 3 RX-7s before my 350Z, and my current Evo.

I *LOVED* my FD. Loved it. It looked AMAZING, was fast as hell (Single Turbo), and would usually run fairly well. However, when "getting on it" I always had worries about *something* breaking. There was always a worry of "what if". It wasn't my only transportation, so taking it down for a week for repairs and getting around to it when I could wasn't terriable, but I could have NEVER functioned having it as my "daily driver".

On all fronts I give it four stars. The reliability issues the car inherantly has can be overcome, and solved for with the correct modification path and *experienced* tuning.

5-6 years ago I paid 13.5 for a 93 Base (with leather and cruise) with 33,000 miles. Granted this was before Fast and the Furious and the BOOM of our industry.

45K, New Motor, for 16K...I'd give him $14K and run.

I've owned both, never had a more fun car than my RX-7 R1. If I was going to the track(road racing) the RX-7 is the way to go. For the street the EVO is more civil. A good mechanic who knows RX-7s is vital, most dealers aren't much help. Don't buy a RX-7 without having it inspected by someone who knows them.
