new motor for 2006 STI?

I was just watching the WRC race and they were talking about the new
rules passed down by Max Mossley. Head of FIA.

one of the new rules is that ALL cars run a transverse mounted 2.0 liter motor.

That has to mean a whole new engine compartment for the subi. no real
way to mount the horizonally opposed motor transversely. i would assume
a new tranny as well. anybody else know anymore about this?

might look around the subi forum to see if anybody is talking about it.

I was watching the same thing, but does it mean the production car has to have the same engine? I guess Subaru got off easy, Citroen has to completely redesign their car.

i was trying to fine out more on WRC news site but i could only find
manufacturers responses. i could find the actual list of rules

as far as production cars not having to have the same engine, that might
be true now. i think i remember hearing the the homoligation(sp?) rule that the
car had to be based off of a production car with at least like 500 or 1000 units made,
wasn't in effect anymore. but i haven't heard anything else about that?

I heard N/A engines transverse mount. Sucks ***. Supposedly they want to bring in more manufacturers and sponsors. Another hardcore event being watered down and corporate taking over.

here's the deal:

FIA president Max Mosley has sent out his starkest warning yet to manufacturers in the World Rally Championship that the series will not survive unless drastic action is taken to cut costs.

In a move that mirrors his bid to cut spiraling costs in Formula 1, Mosley has contacted all the current and possible future manufacturers in the WRC outlining rule changes he plans to introduce in 2006.

The proposed regulations – known as Super 2000 – would be a dramatic move away from the sport’s current rules, but Mosley believes they constitute the only hope of keeping the WRC alive.

He told Autosport magazine, "On the basis of the information available at present, the only sure way of keeping the World Rally Championship alive and prosperous is to make the changes which are currently under discussion."

Under Mosley's proposed new system, two-liter engines would replace the existing turbocharged power plants, while the sophisticated electronic and transmission systems would be canned in favor of a simpler and cheaper alternative that would be made available to all the manufacturers through a single supplier.

The WRC currently has five manufacturers competing in the series. But Mitsubishi suspended its 2004 program following Rally Deutschland after a disastrous time with the Lancer, while Ford has yet to decide whether it will even take part in the championship next year.

"The way things are right now, it's almost certain one manufacturer is going to walk away," admitted a senior source within the FIA. "If that happens then we will lose one of the French teams. If that happens, then it is highly unlikely one French team will stay to fight Subaru, so they will also go – then the world championship will collapse.

"There is a high level of interest in Super 2000. These cars would cost about a quarter of what current WRC cars cost and, if we are draconian in the way we govern the sport in the coming years, then we can avoid that collapse. The case for Super 2000 is overwhelming. The alternative is nothing. The alternative is no WRC."

i read this as releasing the cars from the restrictions they had to have under homogulation rules ( or at the very least would the NA lancer meet these production #s with a 2 liter motor even though it would obviously be the same motor ). that means the sti could be 2.5 liters for the rest of the world, and the evo could up displacement as well. that would be very intersting. i love the 2 liter in my evo and how fun it is with all my little mods, but a 2.5 liter that reved just as high would be awesome if it had a large aftermarket following.

one interesting thing about racing, i wonder if the companies will just put the same amount of money into na setups trying to eek out every last HP, or if they will really just throw 1/4 the budget at the season.

i wish they would build a smaller, lighter, 2 door evo with a 2.5 liter turbo charged engine, and a transfer case that allowed you to run front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, or awd at the turn of a dial with any amount of inbetween bias. then i would only need one car to fit all my racing needs instead of a bunch. the evo has always been tied to the chasis of the lancer, and thats probably why it still exists. but the damn car has always been better in my opinion than any sports car mitsu has tried to make. why don't they focus the whole car as a sports car effort by starting with a semi-clean slate. you can only take the lancer chassis so far.
