240sx .. thinking about it

I have been looking for a car that handles pretty well and isnt too heavy on the wallet. I have always liked the 240sx. I was looking at this 1990 (s13) 240sx with the SR20DET swapped in it. I was just wondering what you all thought about it?

Unless you can get a 240 with the DET swap already done it is way cheaper to swap and boost the DE.

Thinking of selling the lancer and getting it. It would make my payments much lower. I dont have to sell the lancer for it. Just a thought.

My first car was a 1990 Nissan 240SX hatchback. I loved it. Bought it during A-School in Pensacola and drove it to San Diego where I ordered a SR20DET clip with GReddy exhaust system. The SR20DET came straight from Japan with about 30,000 miles on it. I loved that car.

I even got 180SX rear quarter windows and center tail garnish to help with the JDM look. And at about $2,500 it's usually a good first car.

The person wants 5500 for it. Its not in the best condition as the person says how it has dings and not the best paint job. I asked the person and the engine has 40k miles on it and the chasis has 204,000 miles on it. I am thinking it should be more near 4000 or am I wrong in thinking that?

I was just reading on the swaps they can do. They have like 5 different engines with the Sr20 having 4 different versions. I would still want to buy one with the engine already installed though but thats just nutz. http://seattle.craigslist.org/car/71945920.html thats the one I am looking at. It is a little drive up north for me.

5500 for a swapped 240 is a pretty good price. He already has a Koyo radiator in it, an FMIC, and he said he was basically trying to get his money for the swap back. The FMIC and koyo radiator can run close to $1000 for the pair. A motor swap generally costs in the neighborhood of $4500-$5000. What I would be concerned with is exactly how bad the body is. Major zones to be concerned with are the rear quarters. They're a pain to get banged out, and most times I see people just slap bondo in there instead of fixing it properly. The interior with any S13, especially one that's 15 years old, is that it sucks. I'm currently going through mine and getting it fixed up. I've had the cloth inserts in the door panels redone, replaced the seats with S14 seats, and I'm gonna have to get the carpet replaced.

For whoever said that getting an SR20DE and then turboing it is cheaper, I would beg to differ. The end product will not be as good as if you started with the DET motor. You wouldn't have the distributorless direct ignition system and you wouldn't have the forged internals with the 8.5:1 compression. Not to mention, SR20DEs aren't as readily available over here as the DET has become.

I was the one that said turbo'n the DE is cheaper. And I still think it is. Distributeless is onething I will give you, but people are charging way too much for the DET when you can get those 8.5:1 pistons and get any custom turbo you want, and still have money left for a Value Meal. You are probably right about the whole thing but I just love the DE and feel the DET is over rated. But I guess with sodium filled valves and piston oil squirters I could see why everyone wants it

i agree that the DET motorsets are getting overpriced. I'm glad I got mine before the prices skyrocketed. But given the shortcomings of the DE, the DET would be a better block to start with and have much more room for error. Not everyone can properly turbo a car. Not everyone understands that you need low comp pistons to boost a car. I would only get a DE and work it over if I found it for a song (less than $1000) and had access to some moderately priced internals. Even with all the bad pricing on the DET motors, I can still find them for around $1500-$1800 because I can forgo getting complete sets. I've done enough of them now with a friend of mine that we've amassed a small collection of extras.
