Why would you shift from 1st to 4th? You will seriously lug the engine and probably screw up the clutch.

Vettes have a built in 1-4 skip shift feature. It was done so the car could avoid having a gas guzzler tax associated with it. It doesnt lug the engine or screw up the clutch. You can actually start the car in 3rd without too much trouble, I know because a guy who test drove mine did it twice because he couldnt find first.

The C5 can easily get its posted mileage. Torque makes it EASY to shift at 2500RPM and still keep up with traffic. I miss that torque.

The vettes I've driven had no problems accelerating in 6th from 1200-1400 RPM. It's no rocket ship but you don't need to race around the car in front?

And as I said above, if you're sane with the loud pedal, you can get decent mileage in a 'Vette, probably better than the average sports car. You don't need to floor it to outaccelerate traffic. Use the 1-4 skip shift and go easy when you don't need to go fast.

The 2006 Civic SI most likely will as well.

My S2k never got good highway mileage. The final gear ratio was kind of short. That's just fine though because I never wanted to stay on the highway long in the S2K. It was sooo loud.

Calling the Civic Si a sports car might be a stretch. Okay, it is a stretch.

Anything turbocharged won't get you good gas mileage. Boost is gas killer.

But none of these, save the Miata, Vette, S2000, or Z3 are "sports cars". Do you want a "sports car", something fast and fun, or something that gets good gas mileage? And how does gas price factor compared to the cost of purchase, insurance, maintenance, parking, etc?

If you're looking at the big picture, the price of gas doesn't really factor into the cost of ownership unless you drive many highway miles a year- and if you're on the highway, performance isn't much of a factor. I leave my Evo at home when I'm covering distance, as it is just not fun to drive on the highway in ANYTHING.
